Unhappy 4X4 mistake

I just got back from a fishing vacation, so I backed the boat up into the driveway and parked. Wile I was unhitching and unloading the boat my 5yo son was in the cab pretending to drive. The next morning I drove to work, about 25 miles doing 75mph. When I pulled into the parking lot I the truck resisted the turn. Yes I know you guys already know my problem. I did a quick diagnosis and sure enough I'M IN 4 WEAL DRIVE!!! Normally I would have caught it when I backed it out of the driveway, but I was already backed in. I wouldn’t be to worried except that it wouldn’t get out of 4 weal drive even driving straight at low speeds, (5mph). The lights just blinked at me. I'm not new to 4x4s, so I stopped, put it in reverse and sure enough the gears released. That was 2 days ago and I still can't shift on the fly. The truck only has 7000 miles on it. I'm scheduled for an oil change at the dealer next Tuesday; hopefully they can diagnose the problem. So what I want to know is, "how screwed am I"?

When you try to shift, are you getting the blinking light or nothing?

A lot of folks who have experienced what you have have said that the system probably is binding a bit and will seat itself when you do a few trips and back and forth out of it.

But you can't engage now which may not be mechanical. It may be electrical...

Re: 4X4 mistake

Just to clarify the problem. The system engages when I put it into 4x4 without problem. It just won’t go from 4x4 to 2x4 without putting the truck into reverse. I don’t really need to travel any distance in reverse to achieve this. Just putting the truck in reverse works. Without doing so the 4x tire/transfer case icon on the dash just continues to blink.

Re: 4X4 mistake

sometimes while shifting from 4 to 2 wheel drive on the fly, it requires a change of speed, making sure the front wheels are straight. sometimes it even requires the tapping of the brakes.

if you have already tried this w/ no success, then please disregard.

when you take it to the dealer, just tell them that it wont shift from 4 to 2 w/o backing up. dont give them the whole story. that is, unless you want to pay for it.
