I went out to start my truck last Friday and nothing. Nada! I figured at 3 years and 60,000 plus miles my battery was toast, so I went to the local battery shop and paid just over $100 for a high amp battery. I didn't think too much about it until this morning when I went out to use the truck and guess what, nothing. Nada.
I pulled the cables off and found that on the positive side there's three cables going through individual fuses, which merge into a single fuse, then another piece is bolted onto that, which goes onto the positive post. The two pieces that the cables go into were both toast. They have lots of copper in them, and the copper was eaten away to nothing, so I wasn't getting good contact.
The two pieces were only around $25, however, the nearest Nissan dealer that had them was about 60 miles away, so it was about $25 worth of fuel to go get them.
This is just to give everyone a heads up. If your truck has no electrical connection it may not be the battery. Check the pieces that go on the end of the positve cables too, and you may save yourself some money.
Thanks Stan. I'd like to replace my battery soon with an Optima Red top unit. I noticed some bad corrosion on the terminals last weekend, so I cleaned them as best I could. BTW, my truck is about 2.5 years old with 37k on it.
I hear you, truck likes to make lots of crud on the terminals. I've greased the heck of the positive and used baking soda to clean a couple of times, but it just keeps coming back. The wires, like you said, have to be taking a beating. I'll be checking and greasing these tonight.

My 04' has about 42k....Just a couple of weeks ago before heading down to Baja for the 500, I thought maybe I better check my factory "Hi-Performance" battery...After all, last place I want to have a no-start is down there...
Sure enough, although it was starting fine(but did seem to crank more then when new) load test revealed a almost dead player...
New battery, and what do you know? Cranks less to start...
Alot of guys are only getting 2-3 yrs, mine made it just over 2-1/2 yrs.

Gasses from the battery will condense on the metal parts which cause corrosion. You might want to consider using Thermoil in the battery. I am using Thermoil on three boat batteries and works well. The product is a battery oil that floats on top of the battery water/electrolyte and helps break up the gas bubbles, minimizing evaporation, moisture, and extends battery life.
Before Thermoil, when I would charge my batteries overnight, the garage would have a sulfuric acid smell in the air. With Thermoil the odor is gone, suggesting that the oil is doing its job by mimizing the gassing. I have also checked my water levels and are maintaining their levels with Thermoil. Without it, they needed to be closely monitored for maximum life.

Stan
had to go through this same thing just a few months ago. and being i work from 7:30am to 6:30pm it made it d@mn near impossible to get it fixed, not being able to order the parts. anyhow, i ended up buying a new ground cable and the whole positive cable assembly (kinda like one big connected circuit breaker) turns out the ground cable was the culprit and even the new one looked a bit suspect but neverless i installed both new ends. apparently wasn't getting a good charge on the OEM battery and within a few days, hell could have easily BEEN overnight, corrosion set in. the corrosion got so bad it had eaten through half the copper on the positive side through the copper underneath all the plastic. it was so brittle it just cracked right off the positive post on the battery. well, finallly got the cables replaced and instead of taking a chance on the OEM battery again, i said screw it and ponied up for piece of mind. i got an Odyssey PMJ1700 mil-spec battery that fit perfectly in place of the OEM, even comes with reverse-polarity terminals that set-up just like the OEM so attempts of having to stretch the cables were unnecessary!! great thing about the Odyssey battery is there is absolutely 0 gas build up and will not develop acid nor corrosion, so any chances of having this become a recurring problem are nil and void. worth every penny in my opinion and these batteries come highly recommended!!!
better than spiral wound, optima type batteries!
Guaranteed longer service life
With a 10-12 year design life the ODYSSEY™ battery will easily last 5-8 years in automotive applications as long as it is kept correctly charged. In a cycling application these batteries will deliver 400 cycles when discharged to an 80% depth of discharge (DOD).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Superior cranking and fast charge capability
The cranking power of ODYSSEY batteries is double to triple that of conventional batteries, even at extreme cold temperatures. Also, if constant voltage charging is used, no limit on the charge current is necessary and these batteries can be brought to a very high state of charge in less than an hour.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mounting flexibility
Your ODYSSEY battery can be installed in any orientation; it does not affect any of its performance characteristics. However, inverted installation is not recommended.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Superior vibration resistance ODYSSEY batteries are of military grade and have endured rigorous tests that demonstrate their overall ruggedness and exceptional tolerance of mechanical abuse.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ready out of the box
All ODYSSEY batteries are shipped fully charged. Simply install it in your vehicle if the battery voltage reads 12.65V or higher and you are ready to go. A voltage reading less than 12.65V will need a boost charge prior to installation. For optimum reliability a boost charge before installation is recommended, regardless of the battery's open circuit terminal voltage.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Worry-free shipping
The absorbed glass mat (AGM) valve regulated design of the ODYSSEY battery means there is no acid to spill out and cause acid burns or damage to expensive paint and chrome. Because of the starved electrolyte design the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has classified the ODYSSEY battery as a dry battery. Shipping an ODYSSEY battery by express ground or air is possible.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Superior shock and vibration resistance
ODYSSEY batteries have passed a variety of tough domestic and international shock and vibration test standards.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Longer storage life
Unlike conventional batteries that require a recharge every 6 to 12 weeks, the ODYSSEY™ battery can stored for up to 2 years at 25ºC (77ºF) from a fully charged state. These batteries can be stored for 2 years or when the open circuit voltage (OCV) drops to 12.00V, whichever comes first.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deep discharge recovery
The ODYSSEY™ battery can easily and repeatedly recover from deep discharges. Conventional SLI batteries have extreme difficulty recovering from similar situations.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No catastrophic failure
Unlike conventional SLI batteries your ODYSSEY battery will not fail catastrophically. If you are sure the ODYSSEY battery is fully charged and yet it cranks the engine slower, you should get the battery replaced at the first opportunity.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Industry's best warranty
Depending on your application (powersports, auto-motive, etc.) ODYSSEY batteries offer up to a 4-year full replacement warranty or within 400 cycles to 80% depth of discharge, whichever occurs first. Since the actual warranty offered can vary with your geographical location, please check with your ODYSSEY representative for the warranty specific to your application.
