Re: anyone use lucas oil for diff?
The clunk is likely driveline play not associated with the rear diff. The oil additive products are mostly chlorinated olefins, which provide some extreme pressure protection between the gear teeth. For the most part, the additives in the oils are sufficient for the diff if it is not going bad. Next time you stop the truck, try putting the parking brake on before putting it in park. Then, when you start it up, put it in gear then let out the parking brake. If the clunk goes away, it is likely play in the driveline. The parking brake will prevent stress in the driveline and transmission. Mobil 1 and Royal Purple are both good oils. I've heard good things about Amsoil, but never used it. Mobil 1 uses a patented additive that the others don't have that keeps the oil cleaner longer to prevent oxidation and varnish build-up. They all use the same gear oil additives provided as a package from Lubrizol or one of their competitors. So, I would give a very slight advantage to the Mobil 1.
