rear dif question

i've read most of the dif threads and it appears that most have seals leak @ the wheel hub. has anyone noticed leaks where the dif connects to the axle? no oil drops anywhere in the garage. i'm thinking that the service department may have checked and added oil to avoid a warranty issue with my truck. other than the dif being covered with oil it runs and drives fine.
04 kc 4x4 with bt. do you think it's possibly going to go out like the others or is this hopefully not a problem at all.

thanks
jeff

Re: rear dif question

What truck do you have? My leaks were like you said at the wheel hubs and the rear trans seal that also got oil all over the rearend. Have you checked the tranny seal?

Re: rear dif question

everything in the trans area appears to be fine. can't see any leaks up there what so ever. i am thinking that my dif may have gotten pretty hot and leaked somewhere. trip from el paso to la and back pulling small utillity trailer. there's oil from the center of the dif out about a foot down the axle. i touch it now and it feels dry.

04 king cab 4x4 with big tow package. 42000 miles.

i'm just wandering if i should take it on another trip next week or take it in to the dealer.

Take it to the dealer, let them figure it out.

Re: rear dif question

Does your axle have the vent in it?

Check it!

Re: rear dif question

got under to change dif fluid. took out fill plug and stuck pinky in couldn't feel anything. removed drain plug and nothing came out. started cussing. put it back together to take to dealer and started filling with fluid and half of the bottle into it and oil started coming out. so i took the drain off again and stuck my finger in and pushed it though some black crap and oil started coming out. i guess i will refill and go get more oil now i'm a 1/2 short.
hopefully no oil will start showing up anywhere it's not suppose to be.

Re: rear dif question

I just had to have my whole Axle replaced yesterday. I had a small leak… I talked to Tim at DMZ-FAB, said no problem just bring it in and he will fit me in. I ordered the seals and bearings on Wednesday, waited for them to come in. I drove it to work over the weekend and the bearings went out. ISo left it parked in my street, the next morning I woke up to see city car and truck next to my truck. All the gear oil came out, and was all down my street. I got a 500 ticket and they were going to impound the truck till I could have it fixed. I didn’t want to get towed so I ran in side my house got my keys and drove off, then the diff blow; because of lack of oil. So I limped it to Tims shop and found a used Axle for 800 bucks near by.
So keep an eye on those leaks!

Temporary Plug is bad, breather is good.

Re: rear dif question

Might want to try adding this for even more security, the stock vent is a POS.
