05 trans gone I believe 39K

Hello All,

Today I was towing my 7K rated dual axle trailer with 5k milling machine on my way to deliver it to my customer. After about 450 miles I pulled off to get another tank of gas. After filling up I started to pull off and the truck made terrible noise. Luckily I was still on service road. During the trip I kept my eye on temp gages as it was in high 80's low 90's today while traveling from SC to OH. Trans temp only went to about 3/4 to hot 2 or 3 times while climbing long hills and went right back to middle or lower after getting to top of climb. While in the cities I used tow mode and 4th gear not OD once on the interstate I turned off tow mode and ran 4th gear and not OD. I had no problems going up the mountains out of NC,VA,and WV even the last one before Beckely WV.

As soon as I move the shifter it make awful noises. This really stinks!!!

Now that I thunk about it I had some trouble on Sunday while getting ready for this trip. I had the machine on the trailer and had to pull off my concrete drive way with the trailer still on driveway inorder to line up to back the trailer in my garage. Not wanting to tear up the grass I put the truck in 4 low to get up over the 5" drop off of the driveway. The truck did not spin.

After getting back up on the driveway I had trouble going back to 2wd it took several tries before it shifted back to 2wd. After I backed the trailer into the garage I disconnected the trailer and but 80 miles on over 2 days before I left on this trip with no troubles.

I seem to recall a post about other guys having trouble shifting there transfer cases and rear end troubles any chance any of these are recalls or know weak spots in trucks any chance the dealers are doing the right things to stand behind their products. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Any body know anything about Lewis Nissan in Beckley WV.

Best Regards

Don

Re: 05 trans gone I believe 39K

This my first time ever towing a load this heavy with this truck!! I tow my boat which is about 3800LBS with 56 gal gastank filled with out any problems.

I have on 2 occasions used 4wd hi to pull the boat out of the water on steep boat ramps and once at the top stop and shift back to 2wd, both these times where strait pulls of maybe 200ft.

I love the truck and nissans have owned 6 different vehicles over the years and never had any catastophic failures of any kind.

It seems though this is plaqued by rear end troubles and transfer case problems and transmission problems.

There are other trucks who suffer these same weak spots especially tranies whos brand I don't need to mention RAM that I drove a while before the titan.

Don

Re: 05 trans gone I believe 39K

One thing I found out by experimenting last night after uncoupling my trailer and getting ready to be towed this morning. If I shift to 4WD high and then move shifter no awfull noises!!! I did not move the truck just trying to figure out what is the problem.

Nissan opens at 8am this morning.

I keep you posted of the out come.

Have a happy day, because I surely am not going to.

Re: 05 trans gone I believe 39K

First, I'd like to say that I feel for you and your tranny. It should be under warranty, right?

I have an '06 4x4, but it is the first 4x4 where I don't have to get out and lock the front tires. I'm a hands-on kinda guy, so I was leary about it. Anyway, the first time I ever tried going to 4wd (I took her straight to 4Lo) my fears became worse. It went into 4Lo just fine. I drove around the soft sand for just a little bit. Then I stopped, placed it in Neutral, and switched it to 2wd, and I noticed it didn't just get out of 4Lo and into 2wd. Instead, the indicators just flashed at me. I tried repeatedly - as soon as I switched it into 4Lo, the indicators would stop blinking and it would be in 4lo. I also tried going into 4Hi, but same results. Finally, I drove around a bit more and switched it, and it went into 2wd. After playing with it a little more, it had trouble coming out of 4Lo and 4hi.

Anyway, I took it to my dealer. I thought that with my typical luck, the problem wouldn't reappear. However, it did. I thought it had switched into 2wd (I guess I just glanced at the indicator), so I tried to back up. However, after about 5 feet, the truck just strained. That's when I took a second look at the indicator and it was flashing at me (it was still in 4Lo and couldn't get out). The mechanic that was with me got into the driver's seat and "rocked it" back and forth a couple of times, and it came out. He told me that usually, you have to work to both get them into 4wd and out of 4wd because the gears have to be perfectly matched before the truck will go into or out of 4wd. He took me out on the dirt roads (because I told him I was skeptical of the shift-on-the-fly, don't-get-out-of-your-truck 4 wheel drive). Sure enough, every time it was stubborn (and there are times when it does go straight into and out of 4wd) he would go back and forth a little.

Needless to say, I am still a little skeptical of the 4wd, but as I use it more, I become more used to it.

As for tranny problems, I only have 13k on it - not a single problem with the tranny. I do wish you the best of luck with it.

Getting out to lock the tires is only to liock the hub, the probelms people are talking about are with the transfer case, which you would have even if you had manual locking hubs.

That said I can sit in one spot and my truck goes in and out of 4wd most of the time, every now and then I have to pull it a few feet forward. 4low is harder...
