When to change fan / serpentine belt?

Howdy friends. How often should you change your serpentine belt? It used to be "every 2 years or 24K miles" was the rule to follow. I have an '05 with just under 20K on it, so I am at the 2 year mark.

I can pick up a new Goodyear Gatorback belt from Checker for about $30:

I found some nice info from the service manuals in this thread on how to change it:
Help on replacing drive belt?

Let me know and thanks!

Yeah, misssed that part of your conversation in your other thread cause by then it was out of context and more about how your truck was doing at 100K+ miles. Sorry.

I like to get others' feedback because even though the manual states 90K for the belt, that isn't always the best rule to follow, i.e. the manual for a lot of vehicles state to change the oil at 7500 miles too. I do 3 months/3K miles religiously. 7500 miles is too long to wait, imo.

Thanks again.

Re: When to change fan / serpentine belt?

Just wait till it either starts squealing or develops cracks in the ribs. Look for the cracks on the belt where it goes over a tensioner pulley or another pulley that presses on the back side of hte belt so the ribs are visible.

When you went into the dealer, did they tell you to get yours replaced?

As for the oil, on cold start up, it is normal for the oil pressure guage to go higher than "normal" operating temperature. This will also be the case during throttle-up while the engine is still cold. The oil is thicker when cold.

When the engine warms, the oil thins so there is less fluctuation in the guage.

It Is Squeling Very Little On Start Up Should I Throw Some Dish Soap On It. Doesn't That Work?

From my experience, bar soap works for a short time, but I had a mix of stuff that would work great. It was a mix of 30wt engine oil, atf, and solvent to thin it out.

Three belts? Mine has one. The belt takes about 20 minutes to change and 10 minutes of that is getting my fat butt to the tool box to get my tools out.
