Question Axle moan

I have 3100 miles on my 2007 KC, and when I start driving it when it is cold I get a wierd moan from the rear of the truck. (The rear axle I presume) Once the truck warms up - no more moan. The sound is very much like a moan a lonely ghost would make in a haunted mansion. Maybe the metal the axle is made out of is recycled from some old dungeon from yesteryear & now that Halloween is right around the corner the ghost from the dungeon is getting vocal.

Seriously though - any ideas?

Re: Axle moan

Bump.....No one has experienced this? I know I threw a stupid joke in there, but I really do have this problem.

Re: Axle moan

Not yet - only 3100 miles - I really hope that is not the problem, otherwise I'm in for big problems down the road.

Re: Axle moan

Check the fluid level! Plug on the rear of the differential. You will not loose any fluid. You should be able to feel the oil with your pinkie . If you cannot feel the oil by sticking your finger as deep as you can, you are low or dry.

Re: Axle moan

May be just your brakes and once they turn a little, it stops.

You know - I thought that, but wanted to ask you guys anyway. If it is the brakes, does this mean I have a problem?

It may be the brakes, and if it is, replace the pads(warranty work). But still check the dif fluid level.

My 07' brakes make a little noise until they get warmed up.

Re: Axle moan

The parking brake is fully disengaged. I use it each evening because I park on a decline, and it works well enough to prevent the truck from moving unless I am heavy on the skinny pedal.

Because you park on the decline may be why you get the moan when you start off.

Try parking on the level and see if the sound goes away. If so, then that's it and nothing to worry about.

Re: Axle moan

My '07 w/ 7K does same.
I am pretty sure it's one or both of the rear disk brakes. Not the e-brake drum. I'm not worrying about it.

Re: Axle moan

something from my rear end makes a errr er er er er er (or woo woo woo woo, depends on how you interperate the noise) at low speeds kind of in sync with the tire rotating (not tire noise, gets higher pitched when i apply the brakes) Really annoying and kinda embarrassing when im going through a parking lot and all of a sudden it starts making the noticeable noise. Tech told me it might be "glaze" on the rotors and told me to keep an eye on it, which i will.
