OK Everyone lets hear it…
I’ve been seeing a lot of mixed review on which oil is better.
However I don’t see much in the way of reasoning or support as to why one is better then the other. I almost feel like flipping a coin on this one. So before I go and drop my Differential Oil and Motor Oil, I figured I’d see what the TT Community had to say about it. I am yet to be let down by the TT Community and it is by far the best place to get your questions answered. Thank you in advance to everyone for your feedback!
I’m currently running Mobile 1 for Motor Oil and I can’t honestly say I notice much if any difference. Although in all fairness, I think my Rig idles a bit smoother and quieter since changing to Synthetic.
Check out bob is the oil guy. There is a section about used oil analaysis. Type in Nissan and you will get a bunch of stuff. Royal purple does not get good reviews there( shears to easy) M1 gets ok reviews. The best one I seen was Pennzoil platinum. Honestly if properly taken care of, the motor will probably outlast the truck or ownership. Change the oil every 6mos or 5k with whatever will make you sleep good at night. I will be trying out the Amsoil 0w30 next oil change beacuse of the winters here.

From what I have heard, not just here, but from my racing "guru's", my engineering buddies and comrades, friends, etc... Royal Purple makes kickazz stuff. The only drawback is longevity. Everyone seems to tell me that it won't hold up as long, therefore more frequent changes are required. Now for my budget, that stuff is waaaaaaaaaay to expensive for short change intervals. My money is on Amsoil. They were and still are pioneers in the industry. Longer change intervals, better coverage....and no I don't sell it.....yet! Now if you don't want to go that route, Mobil 1 would be my second choice. I read somewhere(maybe even on here) that they have a proprietary additive that noone else has even come close to developing.

There is some speculation that Mobil one sells some of it's additives to Amsoil. Amsoil never states where they get their base stock but most think it's M1. I agree M1 is good for 5k intervals. Anything longer and it tears to shear down to a 20 wt.

Oil is oil.. Change out even regular oil and all is great. Everyone swears by the oil they run. I've had an 04, 06, now an 08. The 04 and 06 have gotten AMSOIL 5W-30. Yesterday I just ordered 2 gallons and an oil filter from AMSOIL for the new 08. I will change the factory oil out at 2K miles. Cost was $ 90.15. Yes its high but as my previous Titans I only change it once a year. 25k miles or 1 year intervals. They all have run great and I do swear they give me a 1.5-2.5 mpg increase.

where did you read up on this? i'd like to check it out. i was planning on switching to m1 but was hoping to go 6k between changes. wondering now if that would be a mistake.
I think M1 ,AMSOIL, Pennzoil, Platinum, Royal Purple are all fine. I only do 6mos 5k changes. I buy my stuff al walmart so a full synthetic oil change is less than 40 bucks for me. I got 80 bucks a year to do oil changes.

I was just on Amsoil's website and it looks like their SIGNATURE SERIES
0W-30 is leading the pack. Check out the link below, they actually provide you a WEAR chart performed by a independent lab back in Ausust 06.
I'm actually goiong to give it a try with my next oil change

I would like to know where everyone is getting the information about Royal Purple breaking down. I've heard of it a number of times, but no actual proof and I'd just like to check it out. I use Royal Purple and the only measurable difference is that the engine runs cooler, 1 mpg increase, and warms up quicker. It does feel smoother and a little more powerful, but thats kinda hard to measure. I towed a 3500 pound trailer( pretty small), with 5 people through 90 to 110 degree weather for 1500 miles. I expected the oil to be toast after that based on all the talk I've heard about Royal Purple not holding up. I sent it in to Blackstone after 5000 miles to have it analyzed. They said that I still had plenty of life in the oil and that the engine is looking very good for 35,000 miles. So I'm sticking with Royal Purple for that reason ( plus I can get it for the same price as Mobil 1). I have no experience with Mobil 1 or Amsoil, but from what I have heard about them they are both quality oils and you can't go wrong with either of the 3.

Thanks for that testimony. I have heard it several times, but no one has ever offered up any proof. Just word of mouth.

One of the used oil analysis report on Bob is the Oil Guy (the link listed above) is mine. The reports on the Titan engines have been great compared to the big 3. That 4 point something liter Toyota has some of the best reports out there as well. I have not seen one on the 5.7 yet.
I suspect if you spend enough hours looking at wear metals in used motor oil like I have, you may reach the same conclusion I have: All the oils are good, all the synthetics are as good or in some cases better as Mobil 1 and cheaper.
I use Penzoil Platinum in both my vehicles now. If there is one oil that is kicking the others A$$, it is this one.
I had Royal Purple in my rear dif until the seals went out. IMO it is just average in the motor oil department, same for Amsoil.
On a side note I have been researching diesel oils hoping and praying they put one in the Titan. I think I have settled on Delo.

I have an idea that is so crazy it isn't crazy (and I am going to try it). Use 50% Royal Purple and 50% Amsoil. That way you should get the benefits of the different additives in each (MoS2 from RP and whatever amsoil puts in their oils). They are both oils and should be miscible, and I can't imagine any chemical reactions between the two should occur as oils are designed to be generally inert in use. The hydrocarbon content should be about the same in terms of the carbon chain length assuming the weight of the oil is about the same.
In view of my extremely intelligent and superior idea, I dare anyone with a chemistry degree out there to dispute me!!!! Let the flaming begin. I will go and get me some ice right now for my a$$.
In all seriousness, I have always used RP and when changing it, it looks the same as when I put it in the truck. So if shearing is occurring, it is not reflected visually in the appearance of the oil.
