Axle Vent Mod - DOESNT WORK!

OK, before everyone gets all pissed at me for posting this, let me preface this with I know what I am doing so dont sit here try to insult me be saying that I could have installed a hose wrong.
I purchased the Toyota part to install into the vent on the rear axle, I then installed about 6 feet of tube and on the end of it is a fuel filter. I have been running this setup for about 10k. The other day when doing an oil change, I noticed my passenger side rear seal is leaking. I have had the truck since 36k, and it now has 65k, that side has never been replaced, but at about 40, the other side was. Anyone have any GOOD ideas as to why this happened? Oh by the way, the first thing I checked was the rear diff fluid level, and all is good. I am running 75-140 severe gear amsoil in it.

Re: Axle Vent Mod - DOESNT WORK!

Bad design or bad seals. Nissan still doesn't know how to fix this. Just keep replacing the seals.

Re: Axle Vent Mod - DOESNT WORK!

I think the main reason for the axle vent mod was to prevent water from getting into the axle when going through deep mud and water. It is possible that it helps out when temp & pressure go up in the axle and the fluid has nowhere to go, but I do not believe this was the intent.

Re: Axle Vent Mod - DOESNT WORK!

The mod was an effert to reduce seal issue, but it's not a "done deal fix"...
You didn't do anything wrong, there are design problems at work here...

Re: Axle Vent Mod - DOESNT WORK!

I agree with Lou and Herb here. I brought up the possibility of the vent being the issue on our trucks to my SA. He summarily dismissed it as the root cause. He's seen them go on trucks that are babied on the road, no offroading or towing and at very low miles. Given that, I'd have to agree that it's more than a vent issue. Not to say that the vent couldn't be a contributing factor in some cases, but the seal would probably have gone out with or without a vent issue anyway.

From that post, quoting a Dana Tech:

- Model year 2004-2007 Titans have the same axle shaft assembly design (includes wheel seal). It is common knowledge in our warranty that these seals tend to have oil leaks and/or grease seepage from excess wheel bearing grease being applied at our plant. Dana Corporation is in process of testing this design to find its flaws and hopefully come out with a better axle shaft assembly replacement for service axles of model year 2004-2007. In model year 2008+, the axle shaft assembly design has changed with a larger shaft, larger wheel bearing, different wheel seal and added dust deflector. However, we are having some leaks reported with the 2008+ design as well, we are working on solving this issue as soon as possible. Nissan is pushing Dana Corporation very hard to resolve this wheel seal leak issue.

One failure doesn't mean the axle vent mod doesn't help. Maybe your seals had damage before the vent mod. We appreciate the report.

That is really sad a$$....In 2008 with a new design, AND there are still leaking issues?
