hey guys...found this thread pretty interesting...I'm in a situation with a diesel....I had 2 Titans....2005 that got totalled ....then I bought a new 2006 to replace that one....LOVE THE TITANS....
both of my Titans were lifted 6 inches with 315-70r17 BFG All-Terrains on them....highway mileage was about 13-15 and around town was about 10mpg...
So..last July I made the smart decision..."I thought" to switch back to a diesel truck....I had a diesel before I got my first Titan......
well...ever since...diesel fuel has been on the rise with no signs of stopping....
now I'm thinking about going back to a gas truck.....
I've got a bigger truck payment now for the "big rig" and mileage isn't worth the price of admission anymore......
I avg 18-19 mpg on the highway....15-16mpg around town.....
bottom line is guys.............the grass isn't always as green as it appears on the other side......
with 35" tires you got 13-15 HWY and 10 CITY? I take it you didn't adjust for teh oversized tires?
Let's face it. The gas mileage now is still better than it was in the '70s. I say it's not the gas mileage being the problem so much as the greedy corporate s.o.b.s that keep raising the prices. Yeah, OPEC is part of the problem...but so are the bastards who refuse to adjust the profit margins. I work for a flavor company, and when vanilla beans went through the roof a few years back, we adjusted margins accordingly to compete. We didn't go broke, made a tidy profit and actually got more business because of the competition that refused to change their percentages. Everyone's entitled to make big bucks when the opportunity arises, but our government doesn't regulate pricing the needs of its citizens (electric bills, anyone?)anymore...and yes, gasoline is currently a need...again I give you the banana smilie- Gasoline will remain a need until some corporate entity owns every raw material/and or technology rights to an alternative fuel. (Oh, and the proper gov. officials have been given a piece of the pie) When there's big money to be made there, you'll see it and it won't be much cheaper. I read something about not buying from Exxon/Mobil and give some business to the smaller competitors. Supposedly, since this is the largest of the monsters, they'll want to drop prices to compete which could create a snowball effect. The theory is good, anyway. Sorry for the rant...I could have typed for another hour on this! Remember, the Titan mpgs are not the problem...

I would like to know what corporate sob's keep raising the prices. The oil companies themselves do not set the price of oil, it is determined by the market and the "brains" on wall street. The price of opening and exploring new oil fields, specifically offshore is outrageously expensive. Some of the deep drilling offshore wells total well over 3billion in price, so that takes a pretty big bite out of the oil companies profits. If the damn government steps in to regulate prices then that would pretty well blow the hell out of the whole free market economy, and you might as well end capitalism as well. My family owns a small oil company and have a few wells, possibly drilling a few more, and our costs have gone through the roof even with the current oil prices. (no we are not rich just because we have oil) Course the only problem with buying from these smaller companies like us is who do you think we sell our oil too? Some of you might have guessed it, Exxon. So buying from smaller companies will not do any good, because the large companies are really the only ones that can afford to own and operate refineries large enough to supply the current fuel demands. Course if the average refinery did not cost a few billion as well, then there might be some additional competition.
Thanks for the insight...we're both pissed at the moneymakers at the top! I honestly didn't know the inner-workings of the business on a smaller scale and I certainly wasn't attacking you. I was actually referring to the non-Exxon/Mobil owned gas stations...purveyors of finished product...and I'm all for capitalism unless you're talking about a need and a monopoly. BGE in Maryland has raised its utility rates through the roof since the cap was lifted. It's not like they weren't making tons of money before. If everyone just stopped driving, you'd see some changes - everyone knows that's not going to happen. I feel for all the smaller businesses out there who deserve the right to compete...

Hey!! That is NO $hit!! I can't believe you said that. I drive upstate and tried all different speeds. One time I was in a God aweful rush and nailed it the whole way, keeping it around 75-85+ and got there with more fuel in my tank than when I drive like a pitiful wussy letting everyone pass me snickering because they see I'm trying to save a buck!!! I thought I was nuts and was afraid to say it thinking everyone would treat me like I told them I really saw Big foot..LOL I've recently been more attentive to my gas usage, obviously, but soft pedeling it and watching the MPG bar on the computer helps around town. Believe it or not, your brain is better than cruise control sometimes when it comes to gas mileage. I drive with an "ARE" cap on the back and was thinking of taking it off for the summer. I don't know, however, If I'll see a benefit to less weight vs. slip stream or if it's vice versa? I also am considering dumping the new Bridgestone AT/ Revo's I just got. They gotta be eating up gas judging by the tread vibration I'm getting. And it actually got better when I brought up the tire preasure to almost max to save fuel. I know it's all probably useless!! I drive a behemoth and I love it!!! Pry it from my cold dead hands you Libs!!!!I'll never drive a little Box!!!

But i have discovered a possible MPG Glich... when i drive 'round 65-70 mph on the highway i get worse mileage than when i do 85+... yeah i know it doesn't really make sense but i've tested it a bunch of different times and it always turns out that if i get better mpg at 85+
If I buy a full sized truck, then I don't care much about fuel mileage.
That being said, I do find the topic interesting. I haven't agreed
much until now with people who think that the Titan's fuel mileage
is less than some other trucks with similar gearing in similar
situations. There are so many variables in stop & go driving
that it makes comparisons difficult, but cruising down the
highway at a steady speed is another issue. There has been
a lot of talk in the Titan forums about the Titan running rich.
I wonder if it runs richer than most other trucks even when
just cruising at a steady speed.

I've discovered a trick I've never seen mentioned. I pull the BT mirrors out as far as they can go. It cleans up the air flow around the truck and acts like a Formula 1 wing. The faster you go the more efficient it is. On the highway at speeds above 90 my gas consumption actually goes into the negative numbers. On long trips it's a pain in the a$$ because my fuel tank overflows and gas runs down the side of my truck. Sorry bout that you non-BT guys.

I thought i was the only one who did weird things with their mirrors. I actually unbolt mine and turn them down facing the pavement when i go on road trips. the aerodynamics of the big tow mirrors act like a wing and give some lift to front of the truck thus eliminating road friction with the front tires. this only works when traveling at speeds greater than 88MPH. Then then be prepared for the fluxcapicitor to engage...GREAT SCOTT!!!! I JUST GOT 9056 Miles TO A TANK OF GAS!!! Give it up guys...a truck is a truck and fuel costs are what they are...and our titans drink ALOT off uel..... 15mpg here and i love what I get for that.

Actually oversize tires you will even get a better reading. Stock tires are 33", oversize are 35" and for evey one revolution you are moving 35" instead of 33"; even though the truck still thinks you are moving 33". So if you covered 330 miles, you actually covered 350 miles

this coming from a GM driver so its just a thought. my thought is that your gear ratio is hurting you worse than helping you. engine makes good power but with the lower number (i see them as higher gears meaning less accel but higher top end) that youre lugging the motor around town when you accelerate. My 1500 Sierra Crew 2wd with 3.73's is getting a steady 15 on combined city/highway 10 miles one way to work. This is with 1 LESS gear than you have (4 spd auto)....
just a thought

The Titan has a 5-spd, but OD is .83 ratio. Ford for example with
a 4-spd, OD is .70 ratio. That is a big difference.
hmmm...your first gear must be really low then...
