4WD - backing up

Twice now we've had enough snow to justify using 4WD. And both times, I've had 4WD HI engaged when I backed into my parking spot and both times, while backing up and turning, I've the front end seemed to bind up, pop, then the front wheels roll freely.

The description isn't exactly accurate because the sensation is hard to describe. But after the pop, the whole backing up motion seemed smooth.

I only have 2000 miles on my 08. This behavior normal? During the motion, my wheel was turned as far to the right as possible.

Re: 4WD - backing up

Totally normal. The front diff is chain driven. There will be some popping with it. Be careful with the wheel full lock with 4x4 engaged.

Re: 4WD - backing up

Part-time 4WD vehicles will bind (eventually break) when 4WD is engaged and making turns on surfaces with enough traction to not allow the wheels to slip. What you are experiencing is not good and could lead to potential driveline damage. Do yourself a favor and disengage 4WD when you need to make turns.

Yeah this will happen not only when backing up but driving forward if you have your wheel fully cranked over. should go away just as long as you don't fully crank. AF and Sammy have given the mechanical reasons.
