Re: Coolant replacement??

I thoguht it was just every 30k and I thought you needed a flush machine to do it. Otherwise your only doing a partial change? I did mine at 40k I'm not sure how much difference this really makes.

Re: Coolant replacement??

I had just been reading the original 04 service manual today, and came across the info. Looks fairly typical.

You dont NEED a machine to flush the coolant. Just take the radiator cap off and pull the drain plug. Then take off one of the heater hoses and run a garden hose into it. That will flush out the heater core and the block. You should see the color change from green to clear when it comes out of the drain plug. To fill the system clamp off the overflow hose and fill the radiator. Put the radiator cap on then fill up the tank. Let it run for a while (keeping it filled) untill the heater is consistantly hot. If the heater is cold at idle then you didnt get all the air out.

Don't you have to remove the water pump for that?

Re: Coolant replacement??

No you don't have to remove the water pump to get to the thermostat. You can replace the thermostat in about 1/2 hour.

Re: Coolant replacement??

Ok, good. How do you change the thermostat? I'll go ahead and change it when I flush the radiator. Never worked on the Titan yet, so I'm kinda nervous. Thanks.

Re: Coolant replacement??

I wouldn't use a garden hose. The water needs to be distilled or purified or you will get deposits and crap in the radiator.

I agree, but from the practical standpoint, how are we going to flush it with distilled water???

Most mechanic shops still use a hose to flush and fill. Really...

BRIGHT IDEAS:

1.) FLUSHING-A Filter that screws onto the hose Bib would be a good thing to do. Just thought of this. Pipe Thread to Bib adapters are readily available at any Hardware store. So a Filter with Pipe Threads could be adapted for this. Cost less than $25 I'd think...

2.) RECOVERY-Now, how about we recover the majority of that Antifreeze and recycle properly, instead of running it down the Storm Sewer which goes to the River. 2 or 3 Gallon jugs for the initial drain and beginning of the flush would be a good thing to do. Local dump has a place to dispose of Antifreeze. Part of the Saturday morning routine.

Using Filtered or Distilled Water for the mix is certainly easy to do, or buy Premixed Antifreeze.
