Unhappy pinion seal leaking... again...

My pinion seal is leaking again and it only seams to do this when I pull my trailer. Now I know the trailer isn't too much for this truck since it only weighs no more than 3500 lbs loaded. However, the last time I had the seal replaced the dealership said that I over filled the rear diff and that's why the seal went. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you fill it up until it comes back out the upper hole?

Also, anyone have any idea as to why my seal is going every time I tow? All I can think of is that there is too much play and when under load it twists the pinion into the seal wearing it out much quicker. This is really the only problem I've had with the truck other than the left rear seal going out, but that was covered and I have since done the vent mod. No more leaking from them for the past 15k!

Re: pinion seal leaking... again...

Probably pinion angle. Due to our weak spring setup, spring over axle, when you tow the axle twists upward putting a bind on the diff. Mine would make a hopping sound when pulling my trailer as the driveshaft compensated for the axle twist. Welcome to the club. I would install heavier springs or traction bars if you want to continue pulling.
