Loud thunk or clunk almost like hit something

Can someone explain this to me or what is going on. I was reversing out of the driveway and put in drive to pull away and clunk it acted like i hit something. Then today it did it while i was reversing out of the driveway. Its almost like it slipped out of gear for a second and then caught again.

Re: Loud thunk or clunk almost like hit something

Some people are used to shifting their vehicles while still rolling and hitting the gas and taking off......be careful trying that in your Titan. It takes a second or two to fully engage sometimes when you shift into gear. Mine does it, but i know it does it so i can avoid it. I cant give you a fix or any better advice, just let it engage before you take off from now on.

Re: Loud thunk or clunk almost like hit something

It happens about 10-20 yards after I have shifted...it also happened while I was braking for a stop light 10 minutes after driving it.

Well I have heard a few people have had rear end failure after feeling the thump during braking. Nissan is aware of the rear end issues. If this doesnt feel like what i mentioned you might want to go to the dealer and have them look at it.

Mine only does it when shifting in/out of gears occasionally.

Re: Loud thunk or clunk almost like hit something

Do you have the Ultibed? The rubber track covers in the bed will slide back and forth under strong accel/decel and the 'clunk' is them hitting the bed/tailgate...

Re: Loud thunk or clunk almost like hit something

So you have an 04.....that no good. Hopefully you are still under warranty? I would go get that looked at......or you can do some searches on here and find some relative content. I have read other threads with this same thing. I dont like that you feel it under braking/slowing. Thats why i am saying go get it checked.

Re: Loud thunk or clunk almost like hit something

A quick check of the differential oil will reveal if there are any pieces of the ring gear/pinion teeth. Since these trucks have weak rear ends, I would start there. I blew my rear end out at 7,000 miles which was promptly replaced under warranty. I also installed a TrueTrac limited slip which is sweet...

Re: Loud thunk or clunk almost like hit something

I had a similar problem in my '04 Ranger. It felt like the driveline dropped out everytime I took off from a stop. It ended up being the slip yoke in the driveshaft binding up. As you accelerate or decelerate the rearend will climb or drop slightly which changes the length of the driveshaft. It doesn't take much to make it bind up and it will make a heck of a noise when it slips free and settles into place. All it took was a little grease on the splines and it cleared up.
