tranny failure !!................................

i brought my truck into the dealership yesterday and now i am getting a new tranny, transcooler and radiator, I bought my truck new, noticed something was wrong the first week i had it, long story short, they could never duplicate the problem when ever i brought it in, my tranny would slip, have a hard time shifting into 3rd gear from 2nd, at 13,000mi. i had the tranny flushed, seemed to fix problem, now i have 28,000mi. and tranny was acting up really bad, vibrating, slipping, and was told aluminum shaving were found, so if your having problems with tranny slipping, maybe this will help with diagnosis, within the first year i had radiator leaks twice, maybe this had something to do with it, or not.... however i am covered in factory warranty.

Glad it worked out for you. Did they give you a problem about your Mods? How long did they estimate getting a new tranny up here for you?

still awaiting verdic from Rick, hopefully he'll call me today, no problems at all, i was informed that all was covered under warranty.

Sounds like a manufacturing problem. JATCO builds really good transmissions, they are not known for failing.

Anyway glad it's getting fixed. If you can get them to do it make them change all the fluid lines as well. Metal shavings will still be in there and can cuase problems at 61,000 miles.

Yes we are seeing tranny failures with titans more and more at my shop. It seems to commonly happen around 200,000 km mark even with fairly light driving.

So at 125,000 miles, it may be time for a new tranny for a lot of Titans.

I don't really drive mine light. take a look at my sig pick and tell me how long you think mine will last, lol.

ok, here is what the service advisor told me, they found a lot of aluminum shavings in the tranny, now that tells me nothing, he did not have an answer he would give me, i don't think their top tech knows, they are replacing tranny, (trans cooler and radiator, now that tells me they could possibly be the cause,) can someone with input explain how that could happen. I am at loss on this one.

Ok, here we go.....try to make this short and sweet.. The transmission (trans) cooler is fed from the radiator. The radiator acts as a heat exchanger, if you will for the transmission via the trans lines). If you have a clogged line, bad thermostat, etc. etc. you are going to have cooling problems with the transmission. The gear tolerances for spacing and throw out bearings, etc. are pretty tight, if they start to overheat due to lack of temp control from the trans cooling lines, the internal parts (gears, etc.) will expand, this will cause metal on metal contact due to the expansion from the heat, creating the metal 'shavings". Over time this will also round out the gears, causing the slipping of the trans trying to shift from one gear to another and "engage" into another gear. This can also lead to "hunting" for gears, if it does not lock into the proper gear during shifting.
So, there must be something wrong with the lines from the radiator to the trans cooler and that is why all three are being replaced.
**on a side note: expansion and contraction of the gears from heat is normal, within a specified temperature range. The spacing of the gears are set up to accomodate the expansion effect from heat, but within a specific heating tolerance coefficient. i.e. from 0-240*F with normal operating range being between 110-180*F, as an example...this is a random figure to illustrate my point, not necessarilly the actual figures for the Titan trans temps.**

dude thanks for the explanation, that is way more than the service advisor gave me. (maybe you should work as a service advisor) update- they are slow boating parts and should be 1st week of may before i get my titan back, i am driving a altima as a loaner from nissan.

the advisor said he has seen about 3-4 titans with tranny failures this past year in anchorage. I believe they were all 2006 models. Hmmmmmmm.. not good but i am so looking foward to getting the T back.....

Perhaps a problem with extreme cold?

I don't remember reading much tranny failures...but this kinda thing always concerns in that "I hope it's not me" kinda way.

No problem, I am a mechanical engineer by trade, so this happen to be right down my alley. Glad I was able to shed a little light on your issue for you since the service advisor didn't seem to be helping you.....
