Air Box / Air Filter

Bought my Titan used, it just hit 15,000 miles the other day so among other maintenance items (oil change, rotate tires, etc) I replaced the air filter.

First off, WTF, who designed that air box? It took a decent amount of jiggling and minor bending/manipulating to get the box cover back on after putting the filter in. Once I got all three plastic cylinders into the loops/holes on the side/back, it went in further but still needed to bump it around a bit to get it buttoned up perfectly.

Second question -and yes this is a really stuipd one - but the pleats on the filter do go DOWN, correct? It occurred to me after changing the filter that maybe the idiot before me (there was an aftermarket Fram in there) had put it in upside down.
