My Gas Mileage Sucks

I got my 2008 Titan SE Crew Cab Long wheel base in February and have been getting about 10.5 mpg around town. I just went on a 900 mile trip and with cruize set at 78 mph. I got about 12.5 mpg manually calculated. I have been reading on here of many getting from 15 to 18 mpg highway. Why would mine be so much lower? I have a topper on the truck and there were 5 of us on the trip. Other than the sucky milage, I love the truck.

Re: My Gas Mileage Sucks

I saw on here last week that someone drove 65 mph a whole trip and averaged 20 mpg. I only average 14-15 and I actually try to keep the rpm's down. But mine is mostly city driving. I have not taken it on a trip yet.

Re: My Gas Mileage Sucks

5 people and a topper is quite a bit of weight to be moving. Anything over 60mph and your fuel mileage drops dramatically. I can get about 17-18 doing 60, but take it up to about 73 and it drops to around 13.5. And that's with just me and a 200lb mx bike in the bed.

Re: My Gas Mileage Sucks

I drove a 1700 mile round trip last year doing about 78MPH. I averaged 16.5 for the entire trip. If you just bought your truck in Febuary be patient. They don't get broke in good until you get about 5000 miles on them.

Re: My Gas Mileage Sucks

Even brand new, mine didn't get that kind of mileage. I'm not a 4WD, but I do have the BT gears. 1000 - 1200 pounds of payload might have quite a lot to do with it.

And I don't as a general rule teach my ECU to be aggressive. I drive pretty sedately for the most part. That might also be a factor.

Re: My Gas Mileage Sucks

If long wheel base = long bed, then i can see why you would get lower mileage. Longbeds have the bigger gas tank which brings more weight. I get around 15-16 mpg but i have the 28 gallon tank and standard wheelbase.

Re: My Gas Mileage Sucks

I would hope you would get crappy gas mileage doing 80mph. It is not a car mcfly. It is called wind Resistance..

Re: My Gas Mileage Sucks

Yup. And there was one heck of a wind blowing. That thing is like a freaking sail. Blowing that big bastard all over the place. Helped keep me awake though.

And yes, long wheel bases may get worse gas mileage, but nothing feels better than 500-550 miles between fill ups.. Till the folks at the gas station ask for 130 bucks. lol

And with a lighter wallet.

It's all relative.
