Question Faulty Oil Cap??

I've noticed on both my trucks that the oil filler cap tends to let oil spray out. I've got oil on the battery, the engine cover, and down the oil filler neck. I usually put 6.78 quarts of oil in them, should I put less? What could cause this?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Faulty Oil Cap??

I don't see how it could spray out of the oil fill tube cap, it's a screw on.

I don't either but it does...somehow? Its a really fine mist of oil that gets on everything, especially the white power steering resivour (can't spell tonight)
I'll take a pic in the morning, maybe that'll help.

Are you sure that it's coming from the oil cap?

Re: Faulty Oil Cap??

not 100% sure, but its in the same vicinity. The 07' seemed worse than the 04' during the last oil change. There was alot on the battery. I'm gonna have to investigate some more tomorrow. There's not a pcv valve or anything that could spray oil is there?

Re: Faulty Oil Cap??

Maybe a leaking trans cooler hose blowing ATF in engine area when radiator fan clutch kicks in? AC condenser fan blowing? Is AC blowing cold air still? If all else looks good check power steering pressure hose from pump to rack.

Re: Faulty Oil Cap??

Mike, thanks for the ideas. I checked them all and I'm 100% sure its the cap now. If you look at the cap it has an O-ring and then above it some grooves that look like vents. I ran the truck while I was checking all the hoses, shut it off then removed the oil cap. The cap had oil all over it, which tells me there's some pressure pushing it up there. Probably when I floor it is when it sprays. Thats my theory? You guys should check your caps, I think I'll put less oil in next go around.
