Rear axle or trans problem?

yesterday i was driving home at around 50 55 mph when all of a sudden there was a hard CLUNK from the drivetrain, it felt as if the truck came out of gear or something, or like something was binding up. almost like i ran over a cinder block in the road or something, then the truck downshifted and the rpm's went up but no go, and just as fast it went back into gear. I tried the manual shift to see if i could get it to do it again but no luck because the manual shift would'nt work. after i came home and turned the truck off then drove it again later it was fine and the manual shift worked great. any ideas whats wrong?

Re: Rear axle or trans problem?

to start, change your rear differential fluid and see if you have any gear pieces in the oil.

Re: Rear axle or trans problem?

this has tranny problems written all over it, i would change tranny fluid and then you should be able to tell,
1) are you driving your truck now? if so are you having the same problems?
2) is your tranny shifting harder than normal? if so your tranny is having issues
3) highly recommend this> take it into dealer and state your having shifting problems and let them diagnos this. Lastly, I hope your under warranty.
4) Good Luck with that.!!!!

Re: Rear axle or trans problem?

well, the truck is and has been doing fine until that moment yesterday with no out of the ordinary shifting patterns. i've broken a 5-speed trans by powershifting in my stang in the past, it came apart in third while spraying 125 shot on it and this felt alot like that, except it went back to driving and shifting normal. i just took the truck in 2 weeks ago for a blown axle seal, and since then my radiator is leaking (prob cracked) and now this. could the axle being fixed be linked to this? and could some of you that have had problems with broken diff's describe the sound it made when it went out.

thanks, DALE

Re: Rear axle or trans problem?

at a mininum take it to the dealer and state the problems your having so when it does take a _hit on ya you will have documentation that this was happening before it happens. JMO!
