Engine Whistles

I am having a problem with my 06 Titan. At around 40k miles( I currently have 45K) the engine began whistling at 1500 to 2000 rpms. It occurs at any speeds but only when the truck is in D. All other gears the issue goes away. I took to the dealer to have them look at it and after four days of them looking at it they have no clue. They want me to pay 95 bucks an hour until they find the issue since Iam only under the Nissan extended warranty. The only thing the dealer eliminated was the air box and intake hose. Any one else having this problem?? Any one know what I can do to fix it??

Re: Engine Whistles

You don't have a throttle body spacer right?

Re: Engine Whistles

Mine whistles too, I think its the stock air box on mine though. After taking it through alot of deep water I noticed that water was being trapped in the bottom of the airbox because some debris had gotten in, I decided to drill the drain hole out just a little bigger. I think that created the whistle in my case.
Are you sure you don't have a turbo?

Re: Engine Whistles

Several people say it whistles. Aftermarket intake or not. I think it's the hole that supplies the fresh air to the intakes. That sheet metal and the the way it looks seems to be the culprit to me.

I think the reason its heard only in D, is because thats the only time and gear you spend long enough time to notice. Make sense?

Re: Engine Whistles

Yes that make sense that it is occuring only in D. I have not changed any of the intake so if there is a spacer it would have came with my truck.

I see many forums started but no one really never answered to if they have a solution. Just stinks that it started at 40k miles.

Thank you.

Re: Engine Whistles

Maybe you just now noticed it? It's really not a spacer I'm pretty sure. No one can answer because of the complexity of the problem I think. Maybe if you are good, you can sit in P and hold the revs EXACTLY where you notice it while driving. Then have a friend listen for it under the hood. Although the RPM's under load vs. no load seem to be different, so that will take some guesswork.

Re: Engine Whistles

It is pretty common. My 05 did it before I put on my intake, did it more when I had a spacer + intake, and even did it when I had just a drop in K&N. I wouldn't worry, or spend the money chasing it down.

Re: Engine Whistles

technally you are still in power train warrenty 5yrs 60k, how ever with the dealership wanting to charge means that they have no idea, the next step is to call 1800nissan1, if the whistle noise is from engine it is covered under warrenty as long as there has been no mods. now, when did it start happening, were any services performed? is the ses light on. any driviability problems, does it happen in all gears foward and reverse? if i remeber correctly there is a secondary type butterfly in the intake manifold for low in tork possible vaccume leak and that would not through a code, need to find a tech who will do som data logging with a Consult or new Toughbook Consult 3 to see what is changing,, but remember dealerships are in it for the money, start a case with nissan @ 1800nissan1 and the dealer or a rep from nissan will contact you.

Re: Engine Whistles

The dealer says no codes are occuring. I also do not have any error lights on the dash. I have no mods on the truck. Everything is stock except for the battery. No work was done to the truck when this happened either.

What would window tint do? Window tint is on the inside...., and how come in every thread your saying to start a case, as far as we know nothing is wrong?

Re: Engine Whistles

window tint pushes the glass out which can cause whistle noise. and that is true there may not be anything wrong, but i have been doing this long enough to know what to do. i have been in houndreds of titians none of which have whistle noise, there is a form that is filled out by the advisor called a "squeek and rattel form" it is done by asking certin questions and also having the cust point out on a drawing where the noise is comming from, or at the cust request ask an advisor, tech, qc agent, or service manager to go for a ride with the customer to verify complaint. The reason i say to start a case with nissan is it can help with monatery recovery, expidiate the fix, and also gives some hope that nissan does care about all customers, unfortunatly some dealerships are after only money. if there is a problem that can not be fixed or found nissan will send out a specialiest to help correct the concern that a cust has. Also calling nissan lets the dealership know that the cust is worried about this issue, it is like going to defcon 3, it does get results, i know first hand,

Re: Engine Whistles

I do not have tint on my windows. I do not belive it is the mirrors or the windshild. The tech can power brake my truck in D and once we hit 1500 rpm we have a wistle from the engine.
