Diesel Titan

alright, this is kinda a 'what-if' thread just to see what could be done

so i've heard alot of people saying they want the diesel in the titan, i agree with them, that'd be sweet...but seeing as there isn't one right now, what if you could put one in?

if money was no object, because i think if it was, this would probably never get done....is there a diesel engine/tranny combo that could be stuffed in the titan engine bay/drivetrain?

i know pretty much zero about diesels, so i'd be interested to see if there is anything out there that could make this project a possibility....not that i'm planning on doing it, cause i don't have thousands of dollars to spend on it....and it'd probably be cheaper/smarter to just buy a diesel, but let's just say for keeping-the-titan-sake, could it be done?

i'm a one man wolf pack....

Re: Diesel Titan

Anything can be done if you have enough money. You would definitely have to swap both axles, and get some HD suspension to handle the extra weight. Then throw in a 12-valve cummins with built tranny!

Re: Diesel Titan

I think the Cummins would be too long to fit. A V8 D would be the best fit I would think. Now is there enough room for the Turbo?

If I could do it I would probably go with a D-max and Allison trany.

And yeah the rest of the driveline and suspension would need a upgrade too.

Yup. Duramax and Allison. Get a programmer. And beef up all the under pinnings.

Re: Diesel Titan

About 12 years ago one of my father's truck drivers has his chevy 350 converted into a diesel motor. I know they swapped out the spark plugs for glow plugs, and did some other things but the shelf life on the details has expired.

Is that what you were thinking or were you leaning towards what's been posted above? complete new motor, trans, axles, and probably engine management system?

??? It would have been easier and cheaper to just do an engine swap.

Alright, I had to call my dad to confirm what happened.

The driver had a 350 V8 diesel motor in his chevy car.

He pulled that motor out and put a 350 gas motor in.

My memory is far worse than I thought

For some reason I remember a dialog about converting gas motors to diesel.. ah well

Re: Diesel Titan

Yeah, I don't know if a traditional block and stuff could handle the pressure of compression ignition.

Re: Diesel Titan

a gas engine doesn't produce enough compression to ignite D-fuel. The only thing the glow plugs do is aid in a cold start by heating the fuel so it will pop easier.

Re: Diesel Titan

Cummins makes a 4 cyl 4tb the same design as the 6 cyl. You can use the same parts to incease horsepower, A guy put one in a early bronco pushing 350 hp, it's a monster. The engine and trans comes from box trucks, cummins with a turbo 400 gm trans, but all gm trans mounts the same so an overdrive trans could be swapped. The weight would not be as big of an issue, you would have an unlimited options for transfer cases but would the famous titan axles hold up to 450 - 500 ftlbs of troque?

I think you can do it by swapping out the heads, intake etc. One of my childhood friends uncles did this to a '70s chevy pickup. I don't think it would run worth a sh*t with just glow plugs, like you said very low compression (8:1 maybe?) versus typical 50:1 for a diesel.

Re: Diesel Titan

lol, i knew there would be the response, 'anything can be done with enough money'.....that's why i said, 'if money was no object'.....just curious what could be done.....

it would be interesting to see it done...that 4 cyl option sounds like it could be kinda cool....would seem weird to have a 4 cyl titan though.........

Thats right they run like sh$t and have no power. Remember for many years GM tried to make a diesel out of the 454 block. It was used in the Olds Delta 88 and 1 ton's. I even seen one in a Cadilac. It was weak and not very reliable. They did just what yu said, they swapped heads and put higher compression pistons in it. But a stock gasser will never ignite diesel.

The shop that I use to work at, could do it. Just type in smokindiesel.com. It would take alot of money. But this guy is good at it. He sell titan stuff also.

I vote this! Not only would weight be a smaller issue, but I think it would be a manageable size for the somewhat small Titan engine bay, better suit to half ton needs, and very little modification of the frame and suspension. I don't think I'd use the Titan's rear axle for it though, I'd look to something a bit stouter.

If you try to stuff one of the larger engines in you would have to upgrade the frame, suspension, and axles just to hold the engine up, which means payload would take a huge hit if it isn't completely gone. If you wanted to add that loss payload back, then that means even more frame, suspension, axle mods. So in the end, it would probably be better to just buy a rolling chassis from Dodge/GMC/Ford and put a Titan body on it or design from the ground up.
