I think the Cummins would be too long to fit. A V8 D would be the best fit I would think. Now is there enough room for the Turbo?
If I could do it I would probably go with a D-max and Allison trany.
And yeah the rest of the driveline and suspension would need a upgrade too.
About 12 years ago one of my father's truck drivers has his chevy 350 converted into a diesel motor. I know they swapped out the spark plugs for glow plugs, and did some other things but the shelf life on the details has expired.
Is that what you were thinking or were you leaning towards what's been posted above? complete new motor, trans, axles, and probably engine management system?
??? It would have been easier and cheaper to just do an engine swap.
I think you can do it by swapping out the heads, intake etc. One of my childhood friends uncles did this to a '70s chevy pickup. I don't think it would run worth a sh*t with just glow plugs, like you said very low compression (8:1 maybe?) versus typical 50:1 for a diesel.
Cummins makes a 4 cyl 4tb the same design as the 6 cyl. You can use the same parts to incease horsepower, A guy put one in a early bronco pushing 350 hp, it's a monster. The engine and trans comes from box trucks, cummins with a turbo 400 gm trans, but all gm trans mounts the same so an overdrive trans could be swapped. The weight would not be as big of an issue, you would have an unlimited options for transfer cases but would the famous titan axles hold up to 450 - 500 ftlbs of troque?
