Same here. Buy the oil at Wal Mart and the M110 filter and you can go at least 8k depending on your driving.

I did do one change with the PP because it was on sale. Not bad, but I'll stick with the M1.

Re: Best oil to use?

I am going to try to run the Amsoil for a 15k duration and see how it comes out. Will send away for samples when I get there and report back. The truck is a daily-driver and does some towing so it should be a fair assessment.

Re: Best oil to use?

if your looking for performance i think the only one is royal purple that can give the extra 1-2 hp gain and or mpg gain. my dad uses it in his 07 mustang and did notice small gains.

i use valvoline sythentic and have used the amsoil before. 5w30 is recommended in the titan
both are great

now.... i used to repair the Lucas racing RV ... this is no joke they ran 30,000 miles on one oil change in their RV, and over 15000 hours on the generator cummins engine of coarse. but i aksed them what they ran on their drag car morgan lucas races. they of coarse use lucas oil.
and also the standard gasoline engine they say 15000 miles minimum, lucas oil will not break down. i think it may be good to change the oil filter out at 3k and top it off. i guess if your looking to do 4-6 oil changes in 100k that will work haha

Re: Best oil to use?

I use mobil 1 0w-40 with the K&N filter and change it every 8K miles or so. Have done this since new, engine is quiet and doesn't use any oil between oci. I like the 0w-40 due to my climate, 90's in the summer single digits below 0 in the winter, the truck does the majority of its towing the winter, i just find the 0w-40 to be perfect. 15-16mpg.

I ran the amsoil for 6k miles, changed it the other day, and it had the consistency and look of black coffee.

I am trying the Mobil 1 syn now, and I am not liking the noise the lifters make, Amsoil Imo is better.

I'll try another brand Syn oil in anohter 3k miles.

Re: Best oil to use?

dc909,

Yeah, I have used Amsoil a long-time and that is about as poor as it will ever look, and as far as it will ever break down. "Black coffee" is actually a VERY good way to describe it.

Oh, and just to be clear, we are not talking about "truckstop black coffee" that has been sitting and sludging for 48 hours... but freshly brewed black coffee.
Sorry, couldn't resist, I read your post aloud to my wife and her immeadiate response was "is that Flying J coffee he is talking about... that stuff is almost like pumice."

it is scary when people say they are going to try to get 10-15k miles on a single oil change.

I thought I was pushing it when I went 6k, and the consistency and look proves I went a tad long ( or at least in my opinion )

I just couldn't beat the deal they had going at the local parts store on Mobil 1 and filter ( 5qts and filter for 29.99 ) full oil change for 48 bones! and full syn to boot!

Like I said, I'll give this oil a 3k mile go, and check it. I saved some of the Amsoil to send off to get tested, maybe like 2oz.

I just never have changed an oil where it came out looking so badly and felt like I mentioned above, black coffee.

and tell your wife, flying J yuck! that is as bad as Horton's lol

Re: Best oil to use?

Doesn't really scare me. I have run Amsoil (albeit not in the Titan) for a combined total of almost 1,000,000 miles (long-haul rigs and multiple vehicles) over the years, all on extended drain intervals (6k + per change) and never had issues with it. Never have had an engine issue related to oil yet. Stupid stuff like fuel pumps and such of course, but not oil-related. The "black-coffee" remark I made was more to state that I have always been surprised when changing Amsoil... that fresh "black-coffee" look is about as bad as it will ever get, even at 15k changes in harsh conditions. It really depends also, obviously, on what sort of filter combo you are running with it. If you run a high-quality filter as well you won't have any issues.

Besides, between Amsoil and a high-quality filter it is too d*mn expensive to change every 3k.
