Dash Air Bag Sensor Reset

as some have found out--and was posted somewhere on the forum ( I searched and couldnt find it) so I thought I would re post it for others.

If the front dash cover is off, and the engine is started the air bag sensor get screwed up and flashes on the dash, to reset it do the following

1)turn ignition switch from off to on
2)within 1 second after the aribag light starts to flash---immeditely turn the ignition off
3)after ignition is off, wait for more than 5 seconds
4)then repeat steps 1 through 3---do all steps 3 times
5)turn the ignition on, and the airbag sensor should go off and not flash anymore

My dash air bag light was tripped and I tried this to reset and this is what happened. Immediately after I tried this, it was still flashing. An hour later and after about 20 miles, it was still flashing. And then I figured it didn't work and stopped paying attention. Then a little later I notice the dash light was off??? Its been several days and still no light. So I guess it worked but it was a bit of a delayed reaction. Oh well???

I'm trying to reset mine but it doesn't seem to work so far.

I start the car, then turn it off after the first blink.

wait 5 secs, then repeat.

3x

what am I missing?

Don't start the engine, just turn the key to the on position.

I am able to get my computer to the diagnostic mode for reseting the airbag light but I cant complete it once Im there. Once you get there is there a certain time to shut off the power for the final cycle or the "fourth kill of the power"? I know you have to wait and count for the first 3 cycles but on the 3rd cycle when it hits the diagnostic mode and the blinking light changes count when should you turn it off for the final time. I just installed a VDC module and had to discon. part of my harness. I have tried this several times with 3 different explanations I have found searching here. Anyone have any problems trying this reset? Thanks for the help. Jay

Didn't work quite this way for me. I followed steps above exactly without success. The following method worked:

1)turn ignition switch from off to on
2)wait five seconds after airbag light begins flashing, then turn ignition off for five seconds
3)repeat above steps 2 more times

Thanks Tom, I will give it a shot at lunch.

No Dice!! I think I am stuck in the diagnostic mode. When I turn the key on all the lights on the dash including the airbag light light up then go off. Then the airbag light comes on and stays on for approx. 2 seconds then it goes off and starts blinking like 7 times and then starts over.......I have damn near wore out my ignition trying this. I just dont want to go back to the dealer for this fix!

I took off the radio cover this weekend to tap into the aux input from my XM Roady2 to clean up the look of the dash. I disconnected the passenger sensor to get the panel off and now the air bag light is flashing. I tried the reset - turning the key on, waiting for the flash, turned it back to off (all the way to the left at the point you can pull the key out) count to 5 mississippi turned it all the way to on, repeat twice, total three times. Turn the key back to starting point and waited 5 more seconds and started the truck. Still no luck.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
Should I turn the key to ON and then
Back to ACC instead of all the way back?
Any help? How much to have the dealer reset? Is this considered under warranty work? I wouldn't think so.

thanks

the daaler will do it for free I assume--but maybe not since they will connect it to the computer to reset it, but the way it is detailed works, I do it all the time when I work on my car stereo, just make sure you let the light blink at least once then turn it off, and count to 5, do it three times, and it shoudl work fine

thanks, that could be the one detail I am missing.
I have not always let it blink once, once the light went out before I could see the first blink, I would shut it off...

nope it must blink at least once before shutting it off--I am pretty sure that was the problem--

I knwo it works as I do this at least once every two weeks

fyi

if you remove the passenger seat and start the car--that will also trigger the air bag reset sensor
