I have an SE without the automatic headlights. Does anyone know if it can be easily added? Maybe by replacing the switch with the auto position and installing the light sensor?

Will it work with the light sensor? I added the auto switch as part of my fog light install, so the sensor is all I need? Or is there more? Inquiring minds want to know!
I've investigated the factory service manual and simply installing the optical sensor will not work. The BCM (Body Control Module) must be programmed to enable the "Auto Light" system to work. (Those of you with manuals can look this up for yourselves in Section BCS page 16) This can be done with the Consult-II scan tool the dealer has. Other than having to program the BCM, I don't see why it would not work. I have the SE model which did not come with this feature but I added the factory fog lights and so replaced the headlight stem on the steering column. I am going to the dealer this morning so I'll find out how much the sensor costs. If it's not too expensive, I may order one, install and have them program it. I'm going to have a spare key made which requires programming so maybe I can talk them into giving me a break on the cost of programming since the dealers tend to overcharge for such a simple job.

I did the exact same thing to my SE. I just went to my dealer and told them that the auto feature did not work. They "fixed" it under warranty and I was charged $0!

Hmmm...That really clouds the picture since there should be no light sensor on models that did not come with factory fog lights. In any case I went to my dealer (stealer) this morning. They want $125.00 for the sensor! (Nissan # 28578-5Z100) Given the price and cost of programming the BCM, I think I'll pass on this one.
What I never understood about the Auto lights on newer cars is why they don't automatically turn on when you run your windshield wipers. Aside from just plain being a law in some states, it makes good sense.

I saw that as well but I also noticed that by default the fog lights are turned off in the BCM but memebers have added the fog lights afterwards and have had no problems using them.
Now I'll have to order it! I pulled the defrost grille and did not find a wiring harness. If one does not come with the optical sensor then I'll have to make one and connect to the BCM.
Slurrpie may be correct about the auto light function but knowing my luck, I'll have to take it into the dealer to get it activated.

Best of luck SoCal, let me know the outcome. On a side note, did you happen to notice where the BCM referenced Halogen / HID ? Watch the 05's come out with HID's on the LE model.
Any idea if they can turn down the sensitivity of the auto light with the Consult-II more than the user settings? I have it turned all the way down, but its still WAY to sensitive. I go under a shade tree or underpass and it turns the lights on...people think I'm flasing my lights at them.
I think turning the sensitivity bar down makes it MORE sensitive...I haven't looked so I am just talking from vague vague memory...at least thats what I remember on the NAV screen.
I have an SE with Fog lights and would be interested in what I have to do to add the auto feature.
