Question Turn Signal Flasher - Location? Replaceable?

Tried installing LED bulbs in the rear turn signals and the turn signal flash rate became three times as fast. I realize the increased flashing rate is normal for when an OEM bulb burns out creating a lack of resistance thereby alerting the driver of this problem and LED bulbs by themselves do not have enough resistance to prevent the same problem from occuring.

One workaround is splicing a 3 ohm resistor into the turn signal circuit which I would rather avoid. Another option is a replacement solid state flasher that does not depend upon a certain resistance to maintain a steady flash rate. This is what I would like to do but where the heck is the flasher? And once I find it, is it like days gone bye and consist of a little two or three prong device that can be unplugged and a new one inserted?

Thanks for any help provided or other solutions suggested.

Marv

I don't think there is a flasher like the old 2 or 3 terminal units. The flasher is built into the body control module (BCM). There is nothing you can change.

I can't find anything in the service manual either so when I got home this morning I looked under the dash and I don't see one in the usual places. I bet the dealerships service department can tell you for sure.

If you call and find out let us know.

This shows that the turn signal comes from the BCM:

scr38, thanks for the info, kinda thought that was a possibility since my under dash check didn't find anything and I don't have access to a service manual yet.

Looks like I'll be splicing in some resistors to use the LED bulbs.

Would be nice if someone came up with a tool to reprogram some of the BCM functions. In this case to have it accept the lower resistance present in the turn signal circuit and still flash the lights at same frequency. Oh, and how bout changing the tacky sounding click, click when the signals are on. Oh well.

Is milleniamarv still an activer member? I wonder if his idea for 3 ohm resistors worked the way it was supposed to.

Send him a P.M. He is still active, I saw a post from him just the other day. Should work perfectly, but I haven't done it yet. The list of possible mods just keeps growing!!!
