Titan sliding tool box mod (finished) lots of pictures!

Titan sliding tool box mod (finished) lots of pictures!

Well I picked up the truck box off Craig’s list for $200. But for some reason it sits stupidly high and the hardware that comes with it hold the box like 10” away from the back of the bed?!?!? It’s the dumbest design I have ever seen. Thus let the moding begin.

First I simply raised the rails on the side of the box by drilling new holes. That was simple but then I decided I still wanted to be able to slide the box out. So that required cutting off the corners of the box to clear the wheel wells.

Once the corners were cut off I just had weld on some new aluminum diamond plate. Simple right! Wrong Well I an beginning to believe I am the world worst welder when it comet to aluminum. The 1st side was a complete disaster, after grinding it down over and over again I finally started to close up the gaps and get some ugly but strong welds down. The 2nd side went a little better. A very wide bead with very little heat when I was near the gap seems to do the trick. I’m not sure if it’s the type of aluminum but it was a serious pain in the *** to weld. Probably would have been easier with a wire feed set up for aluminum.

Ok that’s done now just need to add some paint. I used some back rubberized under coating, it matches the box pretty good. Will look even better once an even layer of dust covers the entire box.

The util-track system in the titan is great except for one dumb design. There is no way to insert a metal back plate into the rear most track. So I took is off and cut out a small section so I could insert the back plate.

The OEM box has this locking system that securely holds the box in place. I wanted the box as close as possible to allow the lid to open so I made my own brackets, still need to paint em.

Well that’s it, hope you enjoyed my post and yes I know my truck is extremely dirty! But aren’t trucks suppose to be dirty

Comments welcome…
