Hello to everyone. I am installing a rear camera on my Titan to help in getting my boat trailer hooked up without all the getting out of the truck, backing some more, get out, pull up, get the wife, bad idea, you get the idea. I would like to hook it into the backup light system so that it is not on all the time. I traced the wires down from the backup light to where they join into a harness. The backup camera has a red and a black wire coming from it and I found a red and black wire coming from the backup light. Would I be right in assuming that I could just splice into them. Have a great day.
Thanks, that's the reply I was hoping to get. Don't wantta make this job any harder than it has to be. Anothew way I was thinking of running it was to hot wire it to a switch so I could turn it on just when needed but then I would have to feed a wire through the firewall and thats never fun.

You would still be better off with a switch for power, imagine, everytime you pull forward your camera will turn off, then back on for the backup again, seems like needless wear and tear on the camera and electronics thinking things will be easier. Would rather take the right way than the easy way.
I say switch it with a power switch not just tie it in to the backup lights.

I agree with this also. I'm doing the same thing now. Also putting a camera on the back of the Camper

Has anyone installed a wireless back up camera ?
The reason I am asking is because Pep Boys has a wireless camera that bolts up to the rear license plate frame. It comes with a 2.5" monitor. It's on sale for $79.99 with a mail in rebate of $10.00 it's only $69.99.
I'm not asking about how to install it, just if it would be a good buy.

I bought the wireless camera from Walmart to put on my tent trailer. I use it to see behind me when I'm driving down the road. Little cars that tailgate get lost behind the A/C unit.
They work pretty well, but bluetooth devices and cellphones seem to interfere with them.
I opened it up and soldered in a new antenna using CAT 5 cable to increase the range, but I remember it worked pretty well with the stock antenna when it was at the rear of the truck.
Just to give you an idea of my setup:
1. I cut off the arms and put velcro on the back of it. That way I can velcro attach it to the back of the trailer's A/C Unit. I tried it on the license plate of the trailer, but the range was too far since it was blocked by the trailer body.
2. I attached a 12v plug to the wire of the camera and ran a 12v outlet under the trailer for power (tapped into the running lights). This allows me to use it on the trailer and the truck. For the truck, I can attach it with some magnets on the tailgate and run the plug to the bed outlet if needed.

I bought the back up camera. I only want it for backing up to my utility trailer. It works good for that. I wired a trailer wire plug to the two wires so that I can plug it into the hitch plug on the truck. When I have time, I'm going to do like you did, install magnets so I can hide the camera when it's not being used.

I bought these back up aids that are aluminum rods with magnetic bases. the rods have a plastic orange extension piece so you can make the total length longer.
You put one on your hitch and one on your trailer and just back up until they touch. It really makes it easy.
Also, when I'm backing up the trailer into a space, I can put one on the inside tongue of the trailer at the point where it might hit my bumper. I can then watch it and make sure I don't smash the bumper with the trailer.

I have a license plate BU camera on the truck and just got a color + ir camera for the camper. The cool thing is I also got a hitch setup for the camera which is similar to my 7 pin connector I use on the camper. The umbilical attaches between the trailer and truck and is removable.
I got a video switcher too. My plan is to have video 1 auto-select to the truck backup camera when I'm in reverse. Video 2 will be the DVD player. Video 3 will be the backup camera on the camper. The backup camera on the camper will be powered when I am towing so that I can see what's behind me when I pass people + the backup function.
I still need to locate a backup wire in the dash for the video switcher and Street Pilot. Is there one near the head unit harness? I've read a VSS wire is present there so I'm hoping a backup wire is too.
