Heater Problem

I recently purchased a 2006 Titan. The A/C works great but the heater only works (blows hot air occaisonally) and only when the fan is turned on to 3/4
of the way. Above that, towards full fan, it sounds as though something
in the center of the floor, below the dash, shuts off and it returns to blowing cold air.

I would sincerely appreciate any help in resolving this problem.

Thanks,

Danny

Re: Heater Problem

The noise in the center of the floor is probably the doors opening and closing. There are several doors in the system mixing hot/cold,inside/outside and you can hear them.
If the defroster is on the compressor will cool the air more than you might expect.
Do you have the dual control, or automatic controls? Or are they manual? Post back which controls you have to help narrow the search.
Some Titans seem to blow lukewarm air until the temperature outside cools off. My 06 blew slightly warm air all summer, but when the outside temperature dropped the heater started blowing hot. I run the heat about once a week to circulate the coolant.

Check your coolant level. Do you see any leaks? Do you smell coolant? Do any hoses look kinked or collapsed? On the passenger side of the engine compartment firewall is the coolant control valve. With the heater on are both hoses hot, or is one hotter than the other?
Are you still under warranty?

A search on heater turned up a lot of topics. Here are a few:
My heater quit blowing hot air!
Heat not working
Heater and A/C performance
you might want to read thru some of them to see if it matches your problem and what solution was found.

Re: Heater Problem

Thanks for the help. I have manual controls. I checked the coolant level (full) and both hoses going to and from the heater core (both) hot.

Occaisonally, when I turn the heater on I receive very warm air like it is suppose to. After a short while I hear a thump below the dash, like a door closing and receive outside air (no heat).

After following your links I'm beginning to think that it is the actuator located at the heater box. I'll do a little more research before attempting to replace this as it appears that much of the dash will have to be disassembled.

Thanks again,
Danny

Re: Heater Problem

I was thinking my heater was out this summer as it would only blow lukewarm air. If the defroster was on it would cool the air more than the heater would warm it. Turning the hot/cold control would change the temperature and I could hear the door move to mix the air, but the hot was not hot. Both my hoses ware hot at the control valve. When the temp cooled off outside to the upper 50's at night the heater started working and putting out hot even in defrost mode. I was thinking the truck senses the outside ambient temp and would not allow hot air in the summer.
Have your temperatures been above 60 or so?
Do you have the controls set to recirculate? There is a delay when the buttons are pressed so you might hear the door move after you pressed the button.
Are you under warranty?

Re: Heater Problem

I purchased the truck about two months ago. I assumed that there was no warranty (since the tag on the window stated "As is, No warrany"). Later, I found that the Basic Warranty was good up to 36,000 miles. So I took it to the Nissan dealership last week with 35,930 miles and they are covering it.
They ordered a control valve, although I'm not certain that this is the problem.

The morning temps have been about 50 and the heater was blowing air at about that temp, even when left on for awhile. In the afternoon the heater
would blow about 80 degrees, the same as the outside temp. I tried it both ways with the recirculation.

Anyway, the dealership should have the part this week and I'll take it back in and let you know.

Thanks for the reply,
Danny

Re: Heater Problem

Mine had to have something installed called a heater control mixing switch.
Covered under warranty, and now my AC can be modulated too.
I think the succker was stuck on the cold side because of the hot summer.

Re: Heater Problem

I recommend changing the radiator cap in situations where the heat doesn't work or stops working.

The pressure is escaping.

NOw that you mention it.......
WHen I brought the truck home, I could smell coolant.
Popped the hood, no signs of any leaks.
So I guess this now falls into a WTF?
