I've painted about 4 coats on the letters. I just started putting them back on and noticed a chip. Then we tested by flicking the letters and it was coming off in just a couple of flicks.
Do we need to let them sit longer? They seem to be dry. Do we need to paint more?
Son of a b!tch.

It's all in the prep. It's a real b!tch to get paint to stick to chrome. You might want to use a bonding agent/adhesion promoter to make things easier.

Well, we just painted some more coats and got everything on. I figure I'll see what happens and worst case I'll take them in when I have the front lower bumper/grill line-x'd or whatever type coating I get done.
I'm sure they'll chip soon, but oh they look nice today!

Doesn't the plastic chrome just chip off? When I painted my nissan emblem on the tailgate, I just chipped off the plastic chrome, Sanded it down and painted it with a couple coats. It's been on there for a couple years and it still looks good.

Did you paint them while on the truck, or did you remove them first?
The emblems are plastic...Get the chrome off first off, weather it be gently with a wire brush or wire grinder attachment. Then sand the plastic level as possible. Then your first coat of paint should be the paint specifically for plastics. I think its made by Krylon or something. It comes in a varity of colors, it may even come in the colro you want by now. This paint is better cause it has a natural bonding agent int he paint, it will actually melt the plastic on a microscopic level and bond the paint into the plastic, almost similar to plumbers glue used on PVC pipe. if the plastic paint doesnt come in the color you want, you still need to use it first to get a good bonding surface for the color paint you do want. 1-2 coats of plastic paint if you going to use a different color. the color should be a color that can be easily covers with the color you want to use. if the plastic paint comes in the color you want you should use at least 5 coats of color. very light thin coats is the trick to make it look even and smooth. 1 letter should only take a small blast of color to coat it. dont point directly at the surface with the can and begin spraying either. Start completely off the letter, start spray and with one fluid slow motion brush over the letter and then release the spray after you leave the surface your painting.
Several coats should be used to give a nice even appearance, take your time and make it look right the first time will keep you from messing with it at a later date. after the look is achived you need to clear coat it a few times with the appropiate clear. Weather it be Mate or gloss. CLear coat it 3-5 times depending on your preferance. let it dry plenty in between clear coat to see what it going to look like and if you want more. then let it dry in SUNLIGHT for at least a day. this will harden everything up nicely, then reinstall.
