What The Heck?? Radiator Hose Collapsed(HELP)

Got 06 CC,OR,BT,FF,4x4,just over 30k.Every thing running and acting normal. I had a oil change about 700 miles ago. Checked the oil level today and noticed the darn top radiator hose sucked closed. All levels of fluid are fine so I opened the reservoir cap and seemed to release the vacuum?? The temps here are dropping into the mid to high 20's and reaching right at 40 for the highs?? The only search result said could be radiator cap or reservoir cap? Dose any one know for sure which it is and also should the hose be replaced along with the faulty cap??? Thanks for any HELP!!

That's normal, don't worry about it. However, I never caught mine doing that, but many others had your same experience.

Pressure varies with temp or altitude, your truck was probally warm when the coolant was filled and not opened since then, now it's cold outside and the molecules contracted.

All true, I freshened up the reservoir this summer with some new coolant.

Re: What The Heck?? Radiator Hose Collapsed(HELP)

Does any one know what causes this? Never owned a vehicle that acted like this. So is this truly nothing to address or be concerned about. It's a real shocker for the first time??

Re: What The Heck?? Radiator Hose Collapsed(HELP)

It would be helpful to see the diagram that has been posted before, that shows the routing of the coolant system. It is pretty sophisticated, remember that the overflow bottle is really a continuous flow bottle, and is pressurized just as the radiator is. I would suspect the thermostat is not allowing a small bypass of coolant as it could. But that feature is not on all vehicles, so just a wild thought, not a true diagnosis. We had a Pony motor doing the same at work, all I recall is we replaced the hose, nothing more.

Re: What The Heck?? Radiator Hose Collapsed(HELP)

It's caused by physics. The engine heats the coolant, the pressure increases (sometimes the cap will vent excessive pressure), you park the truck and the coolant contracts as is cools. This causes a vacuum and the upper radiator hose is sucked in. Nothing to be worried about, it's normal for the Titan.

Re: What The Heck?? Radiator Hose Collapsed(HELP)

Thanks for the HELP/input !! I wasn't overly concerned because the gauges and fluid levels are normal. I guess all TITAN's do this at one time or another. Seeing it for the first time is a surprise I could definitely live without.

Re: What The Heck?? Radiator Hose Collapsed(HELP)

Yes.... Mine did this when I was changing my oil the last time... Freaked me out a bit, as I had never seen this on any prior vehicles either... Shut it down, opened the radiator cap, it went back to normal... What gave me reason to NOT worry was that the discoloration on the outside of the hose indicated that this was not the first time it had done it... I just never noticed it before...

But it will go back to open on its own...

Both the upper and lower radiator hoses collapse and return to "NORMAL".
