Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

I've always used convential motor oil but have a friend who has become an Amsoil dealer and he keeps trying to talk me into changing motor oil. What do you guys know about changing to the Amsoil synthetic? One bonus that I would like it only having to change oil every year or 25k miles.

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

Amsoil is premium synthetic oil for sure, and carries a premium price. Still, I wouldn't change my oil every 25k with it. I run Mobil 1 full synthetic and change it every 8k in the Titan and the wife's Acura.

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

Amsoil is very good oil! Make the change!

I have never gone 25K though. You could run it for 15k or so and send a sample to blackstone and see what they say!

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

I would never go 25k. My biggest question is I change my convential oil ever 5k miles and synthetic you really change 8k-10k miles and the cost is much higher, so why do the change? Plus once you go synthetic you can't go back.

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

I've used Amsoil products for years, with very good results. It is possible to take advantage of extended oil changes, but be aware, to do so you need to use extended life oil filters as well. Your friend, the Amsoil dealer is right in that Amsoil does offer a premium synthetic oil and an extended life filter....both rated for 25,000 miles. It's also interesting to note that Amsoil has done some real-life testing, in which they ran over-the-road trucks for over 400,000 miles (not a typo) without changing the oil, but regularly changing filters at recommended intervals. At the conclusion of the tests, engine tear-downs revealed negligible wear. A good source for research on extended oil changes (research data....not opinion...and not "I do it this way because my Father/Grandfather said I should") is a book entitled The Oil Man's Bible. If you find yourself being a non-believer....run Amsoil and an exended life filter for 15,000 miles or so, then send an oil sample into a lab for analysis. I think you will find that the results will set your mind at ease. One thing I would advise against....don't pay the additional price for Amsoil or any other synthetic oil if you are going to change oil as frequently as you would with petroleum-based oil. To do so is a waste of money. In short....it doesn't matter what oil you use if you're going to change the oil and filter every 3000 miles.

One final item....it is possible to use synthetic and then switch back to petroleum-based oil if you wish without a problem. The "you can't go back" notion is an old wives tale. In fact, Amsoil indicates that if you need to add oil and synthetic oil is not available, it is perfectlly OK to add petroluem-based oil to your crankcase (What do you think synthetic blends are?).

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

AMSOIL's published tests and honesty when (in the rare instances) another oil performed better, sold me on AMSOIL. I ran it in my turbo'd Silverado and will likely run it in the Titan. Either that or Mobil1.

Sure you can!

I change my oil twice a year in both vehicles. I like using synthetic because, according to studies, it does not break down as fast. If I was using convention oil, I would probably be changing my oil about twice as often. To me, the "good feeling" of using the better is oil worth it.

The cost is about the same. Conventional is about $20-25 per change and IIRC it is a little under $50 for me to change with synthetic.

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

at the 5-6K interval, I would stay with a blend. I have been running Amsoil bumber to bumber in everything since the early 90's and have always been pleased. In my vehicles, I change it once a year which is usually around 15k. Like another post said, using the absolute efficiency filter is a must. I was a little hesitant to go to amsoil on my tranny due to the j-matic (now s_matic) push, but I made the switch about 25k ago and haven't had any problems.

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

Just changed to AMS Motor Oil a month ago, after using mobil 1 for the last 10 years. The first thing I noticed it the ticking is gone while idleing, and I got a little better than 1mpg. Not bad for changeing brands. It is a little more expensive but you can't beat the piece of mind. I used a OEM filter so I will probably go 8-10K miles between changes. Maybe next time I will use the EA filter and still change it at 10k.

On a side note, I have used AMS in the front and rear diff, transfer case, and complete tranny flush. Not problems what so ever. Was a little leary about the whole Matic-J thing but Haven't had a problem yet.

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

So if I go with Amsoil oil and oil filter and change my oil every 10k miles I should be ok? I live in North Carolina and have always used 5w-30. Should I continue with this or change to the 0w-30?

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

You could probably go alot further than 10k miles. I would feel completely comfortable with at LEAST 15k with that oil and extanded life filter.

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

I agree with silverstar's 15K and stay with 5W-30. I tried the 0W-30 and developed a tick/tap.....

Re: Amsoil Synthetic Oil?

I run AMSoil 0w-30 all year long. It's not unusual for me to do a cold startup when the temperature is below zero.
