Unhappy Leer Cap Attachment and Utili-trak

I just spoke to Leer Cap distributor, asking about the availability of caps for the Titan. He said that they now have the 100R model available, 3-4 week order time.

What disturbed me was that he said that you have to remove the side utili-trak rails to install the cap, because you have to clamp the cap to the side rails. I asked if they can be bolted through the top of the rails. He said "No' they have to be clamped because it's fiberglass. If it's bolted, it will invalidate the cap warrantee. He said he's done 3 already.

Has anyone encountered this???? Any input from those with knowledge on the subject would be appreciated!!

Get an ARE LS II. You can still use the utilitrac system. I got it 2 days ago, it rocks.

Sounds like it would be better to go with an ARE Z series. The ARE clamps engage the utili track rails at the front and back, thus only limiting sliding along the track for a couple of inches front and back. I had a discussion regarding this with my cap dealer and he said no problem. The ARE Z series mold was supposed to be done by April 15.

I emailed Leer this morning around 10:30am. They replied by 1pm, pretty good response time!

They said that they have special clamps for the utili-trak system. I'm still sending emails back and forth, but it's possible that the distributor/installed was not aware of this. Of course, the dist./inst. said that there was not an A.R.E. cap available yet. (Not true, FLFF, huh). I could have been talking to a Dumb A**.

More to come.

Hey FLfinfan, do you have any photos yet of your cap. I'd love to see a picture.

Here in the Dallas area, none of the truck accessory shops I visited had any that would fit the UtiliTrac and one of them put a call in to his supplier and will call me back(hopefully) on Mon.

I really would like to see FLfinFan's finished product; 'cause I love A.R.E. caps. Such high quality.

Called the Leer dealer in Sacramento today. The sales guy I talked to put a Leer 100R cap on his own Titan Crew Cab today! I'm going ot look at it tomorrow and probably order one. Also I found out that the stock Leer 100R has the fold down front window. I thought only the A.R.E. caps had this option.

OK. I ordered a Leer 100R cap today from my dealer. They expect it to be in by the 14th. The special clamps are suppose to be available from Leer some time next week. The 100R has a fold down (actually removeable) front window like the A.R.E. My price is $1399 for the shell plus $75 installation.

Hey Gary,

That's good news. Please let us know how the installation went. Pictures would be good too!

Also, how many clamps do they use on each side of the cap (I don't know if you have a KC or CC, or if that matters).

Thanks!

Sorry, when I posted earlier in the thread I was talking about a tonneau, not a topper/camper top. Sorry for the slip up.

No problem FLFF, I think the attachment may be the same. Looking forward to Gary's input. I'm still working on info from Leer as well.

I've got a crew cab, I don't know how they'll do the clamps. After the install I'll post some photos.

Visited the Leer distributor last night. Really nice guy (Cap World, Norwood, MA). He said he would look into the clamp thing and will take care of it. Ordered the 100R model with the Yakima roof rack. Order time is 2 weeks, so it should be in around the same time as the truck.

I ordered a Leer 100R at Cap World in Laurel, MD. They were also very nice folks to deal with. They said it wouldn't be delivered until mid-June. I hope it arrives earlier. The dealer said they had the clamp issue worked out and would be delivering special clamps to use with the utilitrac.
