Dealer Screwing Me... *UPDATE!*

original thread here: Dealer is screwing me over!!!

Well I went back to the dealer today.

They tried the expected gimmicks:

"Your payments will only go up $17/month"
blah blah blah

Got to the point where I just said I'm not signing any other contract. Bring me my trade in and keep the TITAN (didn't do anything drastic to it because I had a feeling I would win it back to my satisfaction).

Well I'm signing the release forms for them to give me my old truck back and give them the TITAN back.

Manager comes over one more time and says here's what he is going to do. Lowered the price of the TITAN waaaay below invoice and put you at a higher interest rate, lowering your original payments by $20. The out the door price is now $19598 (XE preffered package, GAP, and gold warranty 60K miles) w/ them keeping my original $800 down. It is an awesome deal, but I wanted my $800 downpayment back. They wouldn't budge on that. They said they needed the $800 so I said nah.

So we go back to signing the release papers and I see my Yota pull up. At this point I know what the lowest total out the door price range they worked to. I walk up to the manager and tell them I want it for $20K OTD. No down. I have a check. Cashiers check. From my bank. You don't have to search for a lender anymore.

Should have seen the look on the managers face!!! Priceless!!!

Dealer: "Why did you lie to us? That is really unethical."
Me: "I did what I felt you were doing to us. You want the deal or not?"
Dealer: "No I cannot do that deal."
Me: "Ok... your loss."

So I go out to the Titan and get my things out of the truck. When I go back inside, salesman is sitting there waiting for me. Wants to hear my story. The manager just spoke to him about me having a check.

Salesman: "So how much is the check worth?"
Me: What I offered your manager. (but was really way over that)
Salesman: "Here is the number that he said he can do. $20,500 OTD. So you only have to come up with $500 to cover the gap.
Me: (Yah I was really lowballing w/ the 20K OTD!!) so I say... "OK you have a deal."

I finished writing the check and he takes it, and this time he is SHOCKED that it was preapproved for way over the selling price! (He was trying to glance over and see how much it was worth while I was filling it out, but I was covering it with my arm!)

I keep my TITAN, they keep my trade in!
I'm happy because I was able to lower my payments considerably, keep my downpayment, and keep the most important thing... the TITAN!!!!

So I think it is a good thing when the dealer calls you back and says they can't finance you for the rate given. They will do whatever it takes for you to keep what they sold you because they are going to take a loss either way. They want you to be happy so you don't give them a bad name... (but the manager wasn't too happy what I did to him!)

We were being pretty loud about how upset we were (my wife and I) and it turned some other customers heads. They even came up to us and asked us what was going on!

BTW, the numbers I listed above are not exact and don't take into account what I owed on my trade in. They basically ate up what I owed which was way more than it was worth!

Great news.

Reminds me of my first dealings with US car dealers. When I first moved to the states I purchased a Ford, only to have to return it 3,000 miles later due to the financing not being approved. With hindsight they did me a huge favor, but it was a major hassle at the time. So I then bought a Jeep, after explaining carefully the Ford story we had the finance approved before I even test drove a vehicle. Next day I get a call from the salesman asking if I could come back and resign the deal. I asked if I had a legal obligation to do so and he said he had no idea he'd get the finance guy to call me, never heard squat. Turns out they had applied too much discount to the Jeep, when the paperwork from chrystler finaly arrived it showed a $2600 trade in, I did not trade a vehicle for the Jeep.

Also when I bought the Titan even though the deal had been agreed they kept showing me a finance figure that did not correctly add up to the agreed deal, tag, title, etc. I had this all worked out and broken down beforehand, the salesman went back to the finance person 5 times before they produced the correct figure. Just goes to show it pays to do your homework.
