BLIND SPOT...whew

Well, I sure love my Titan.
I'm having a hard time getting used to the big blind spot on the right side, though. Nothing against the truck. I'm only reporting this to suggest caution to all, as I just about clobbered a car sitting in my blind spot, this morning. Titans are big. Oh yeah, I'm not some crappy driver (never caused an accident in 18 years of driving), I'm just saying check twice before you change lanes to the right!

Humbly,
HS

Dang, I had to re-read it to make sure you said "almost clobbered". I know you just got the thing a couple of days ago. I would have gone and thrown up for you..

Are you talking about when you change lanes to the right? Do you have the Big Tow package? I have the Big Tow package and with that you get wide angle blind spot mirrors that work great. I use them more than the regular part of the mirror. I use them to merge onto the interstate and I can "pickup" the traffic behind me before I am parallel to it. If you don't have theses mirrors there have been people on this forum before willing to swap out.

HS, I'll second Bayou's tow mirror comment. I'm a first time truck owner (of the finest truck available). I moved into the Titan from a VW Passat. Am I careful of situations like yours? Yes sir! Those fine mirrors have saved me significant embarrasement twice now, and I've only got 1900 mi. on the truck. Did you know they're available over the parts counter? Expensive (around $350 ish), but so are moving violations with damage, particularly to somebody else.

The blind spots are nothing compared to the blind spots in the 350Z Roadster with the top up. It's all dark except for a small oval window in the back. There is a way to adjust your side mirrors to eliminate almost all of the blind spots. I performed this adjustment in my Z and it really helps.

To elimiate blind spots make sure you are positioning your side mirrors properly.

To position the left mirror, place your head against the left door glass and then adjust the mirror so you can just see the side of the car in the mirror.

To adjust the right mirror, lean over to the center of the car as far as possible and adjust the mirror so you can just see the side of the car in the mirror.

This method helps minimize, if not eliminate, blind spots.

As a car moves out of the view of your rear view mirror, they move into the view of the side mirror and as they move out of the side mirror, they move into your peripheral vision.

With the narrow view out the rear of the Z, though, you might still end up with a bit of a blind spot.

Here is a link that describes it in more detail. This might be worth giving a try.

I thought you were gonna say the big upside down "Y" at the bottom of the A pillar. That can easily hide pedestrians or bikes moving into the intersection when making right hand turns.

As far as the mirrors I have the smaller ones, but have added the little stick on convex mirrors you can buy in sets. Put them on the lower outside corners of the regular side mirrors and it helps alot. Also helps show me where the lines are in parking lot spaces.

Half Shovel,

Just go to Pep Boys or Wally World and pick up a pair of 3" circular convex stick-on mirrors and paste them on the lower outside edge of your side-view mirror. I've used them on every truck I've ever owned and they work GREAT.

All,
I have the big tow (and big mirrors), I'm just getting used to the new mirrors, new truck, etc. It's amazing how different the Titan is from my ol' Tundra.
Size DOES matter...lol

This method works wonders. I saw a similar post 3 years ago, started using this method, and it helps out tremendously. Most people do in fact set their mirrors to far in. Great post!

In my Titan with the Big Tow mirrows, I have no blind spots at all. Just use the convex mirrors and they cover everything along with your rearview.

Big Tow Mirrors

I had blind spot problems trying to use the lower mirrors as blind spot mirrors. Just couldn't get the adjustment right. The problem was that I wanted to see everything in the upper mirror with the lower mirror as a blind spot to view and inlarge details in the top mirror.

One day I decided to treat the 2 mirrors as seperate mirrors. What I mean is the top mirror for distance and the lower for a close in view. This gives some image overlap but no close up in the top mirror and no distance in the lower mirror, problem gone.

I've always read that you are not supposed to have any of your vehicle in the view of your mirror. People always do this in error when adjusting their mirrors because it makes them confortable. A vehicle on either side will not be rubbing the side of truck and having your own vehicle in view decreases the viewing area of the mirror where another vehicle could be. You don't want the view of the mirror to view too far from your vehicle either because you will miss picking up a motorcycle when it passes you.

I cannot tell if you are questioning the method or not. Once you return your head back to the driving position you won't be able to see your vehicle. You only align by looking at your vehicle when your head is ****ed to the left touching the window, or leaning to the right.

Motorcyles pass me at their own peril, especially in stop and go traffic. There have been too many times I am in stop and go traffic and this bike comes flying up my left or right. Scares the hell out of me. Why can't they wait too?

Oh, I see what you mean now. That is an effective way to make the adjustment.

my biggest problem is coming from a full size van where you are basically sitting over the front bumper to the TITAN where the front of the hood/headlights gradually disappear from sight....I havn't smacked anything yet, but sometimes when parking, I miss-judge the distance from the curb I am approaching and the front tires...when all of a sudden...OOOPS , IM THERE.
