Swarf.

Metallic shavings, specifically from a cutting wheel or machining process, but may be any metallic shavings.

I suppose mung works too...

Of which is ferrous metals.

For those of you who do any offroading it's also a good idea to check the diff. fluids for water if your crossing any streams.

I decided to change mine as well, they didn't have any mobil 1, so i put valvoline 80w-90 durablend. Wanted full synthetic but they didn't even have in valvoline.
Quick question? I changed mine and bought 2 quarts to cover the 3 3/4 pints that the owners manual shows. The 2 quarts weren't enough, I bough a 3rd quart and used some of it. And now the level is right. Did anyone else need more than 3 3/4 pints? I wonder if this is why mine was low from factory. The assembly line person probably set his filler to 3 3/4 pints and thats it.

The service manual quotes 4.25 pints so you were correct by adding more than 2 quarts of which is 4 pints.

Yes, I used three quart bottles. After I dumped the remainder from the first two into the third, it looks like it came out about right. I used to have a hose with a pump for those big jugs of diff oil which made it really easy, but I can't find it. I am going to look for one before I do it again.

No, 2+ quarts, but I couldn't completely empty the first two.

I found a pump: http://doityourself.com/store/6847610.htm

yeap, thats about what I had to put in. Service Manual and owners manual differ. owners manual does say approximate, though. Like bestatchess, I couldn't get all out of the bottle, I need a new pump too. So I lowered the spare tire and got the qt bottles with the nozzles and squeezed. Still glad you guys brought this up. I haven't pulled anything yet, but with it low and pulling something, wonder if that would hose it? hard to say.

I have no doubt that it would likely overheat the entire unit. That's one reason I've always used a synthetic in the diffs of my past vehicles. That oil gets subjected to high shock loads, high temps., and extreme pressures, with no filter or cooler. Always a good idea to change frequently.......

So you all might want to check your fluid level ASAP and let me know what you find. By the way it's real easy to check, all you need is a 3/8" drive ratchet and a clean rag. Nothing more, Nissan made it real easy to check/fill the rear diff and they made it easy to drain because they also installed a drain plug on the bottom.......VERY NICE!! I think I'll drain it out this weekend just to make sure I don't have any BIG chunks floating around in there....

Lets hope that the transmission didn't come from the factory low also, since none of us have a dipstick to check it.

Sure we do, that black cap you see sticking out on the right side of the engine is the ATF dipstick. Just take a 10mm socket and remove the bolt holding it to the tube. Also when you check the fluid make sure the vehicle is warmed up, that means transmission too, so a 7 mile trip is generally considered enough warm-up for most tranny's. Take a clean sheet of printer paper, pull the dip-stick out with the engine running, wipe it on the paper, stick it back in, wait a second, then remove it and check the level. It should be fine. The fluid should smell like new ATF too with no burnt smell to it. If you need pictures let me know....

Thanks for the info. No one at Nissan knew why my truck didn't come with a dipstick. They just told me to get it serviced at my local dealer.
