Everyone PLEASE READ!!!

After reading Titansurveyors thread Titan rearend problems concerning his rear differential burning up, I decided to check the fluid level in mine for the first time. It was low, and I mean really low. I had to add 20ozs just to bring it up to the bottom of the fill plug hole. The whole thing only holds 68ozs!!! So you all might want to check your fluid level ASAP and let me know what you find. By the way it's real easy to check, all you need is a 3/8" drive ratchet and a clean rag. Nothing more, Nissan made it real easy to check/fill the rear diff and they made it easy to drain because they also installed a drain plug on the bottom.......VERY NICE!! I think I'll drain it out this weekend just to make sure I don't have any BIG chunks floating around in there....

Thanks for the notice will check tomorrow. Strange that it would actually be low from the factory, perhaps these are shipped from Dana filled. I take it you didn’t see any evidence of it leaking?

That's a good assumption...no leaks!!! Also per the manual it recommends 80W-90 GL-5 in case someone was wondering.

I just drained mine. After towing my 8500 pound boat for quite a few of her 4500 miles I would say that it was pretty dirty, but the fluid level was not low. Good luck.

jetforman, greasy - good advice. I just checked mine. It was not level with the bottom threads of the check plug? But if I reach my pinky finger in I get fluid on it. would say about 1/8 to 1/4 inch lower than bottom of threads of check plug. Looks low to me by a very little. Am I correct? or is this the correct level?
thanks for your advice

The manual states even with bottom of the fill plug. So it sounds like yours is a little low but not too bad. Still needs some though!!

Remember to check your fluid warm. If you live in colder climates the oil will be thicker so "DON'T OVER FILL"

I guess so, the service manual doesn't specify cold or warm but it does specifically state to replace the fluid every 3K miles if your towing, for all of you tow'ers out there....

I checked the rear diff. Not low. Then I changed the diff oil. A few filings on the drain plug magnet, a few small globules. Nothing that makes me think that it won't go 250,000 miles, but enough that I don't think changing it at 5,766 miles was a complete waste.

I absolutely hate the smell of gear oil... I tried Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, and a bunch of different dino fluids... still haven't found that doesn't smell horrid.

Every diff with a magnetic drain plug I've changed fluid in has had some gunk on the magnet - completely normal, especially if it's the first fluid change.

Here's the $1 trivia question for the night: What's the real word to describe the gunk on a magnetic drain plug? Get it right and I'll paypal ya $1.
