Dyno date set tomorrow for 1pm 06/17/10
UPDATE!!! Sparkplugs.com says they will cut me a check for the dyno testing!!! So hold off on asking the wives. lol... They are also going to send me out a new set of my current spark plugs NGK (6240) PLFR5A-11 Laser Platinum Spark Plug so that it will be brand spanking new vs brand spanking new!!!!!

Some of you have been asking what the Dyno numbers would be between the stock sparkplugs & the Pulstar sparkplugs. I received a set from sparkplugs.com and they wanted my feedback on how they performed. They did NOT ask me to dyno test them and do before and after dynos but I thought it would be a good idea and finally get some real numbers regarding our trucks and the Pulstar plugs. I have recently changed my stockers out with OEM spark plugs about 3 or 4 k miles ago so they are still pretty new so the dyno would be pretty much new plug to new plug. I talked to the wife about it and it's a big fat no on spending $160 on getting the test done. So, sorry.

BUT, if we look at this as a scientific experiment, we could all contribute $5 or so in the name of science. Our wives can't argue with that, right? LOL. If I get enough, I can get the Dyno tests done.

I think we should go about it by starting a list as to who would be able to pitch in on the Dyno cost then if by the weekend we have enough people pitching in then I would just give out my pay pal address and get er done. If not then I will just install them and give the infamous BUTT DYNO and BETTER THROTTLE RESPONSE experience with the Pulstars. And also see if they give better gas mileage.

MODERATORS if this is not allowed then I'm sorry... If it is then let’s try to get this done. I know I'm not the only one who has wanted to see before and after dyno's with these sparkplug's on our trucks.

More info: These are the Pulstar DG1i (i = iridium) they have been out for about 4 weeks according to Pulstar. I have a set of OEM NGK spark plugs in the truck now with about 3 -4 k on them. The cost to do one set of 2-4 runs would be 75 bucks plus tax. This would be done once with my current set up then once with the Pulstars on the same day. So $150 plus tax.

The shop I would be taking it to uses a mustang dyno. Here is the website with more ionfo on the type of dyno they use MMSPowerhouse.com

They offered to swap out the plugs for me while on the dyno but I have concerns about changing out the plugs while the heads are still hot. So I would do the first runs then go home let it cool change out the plugs and go back for another set of runs.

Let me know if you anyone has a better idea as to how to test these out. Should I give the truck a few weeks before running the dyno with the Pulstars or do them the same day?

I do have paypal but I had wanted to see if I could come close to the price I would need. before any money exchanged hands. This way I would not have to do tons of refunds if it just did not happen.

On another note It probably wont be necessary anymore . Sparkplugs.com Saw my thread and informed me they were going to see about funding the dyno for me . Then about 5 minutes later they told me they were going to go ahead cut me a check for the amount needed for the dyno testing . In addition to cutting me a check they are also going to send me a brand new set of the NGK (6240) PLFR5A-11 Laser Platinum Spark Plug that I currently have in the truck so the test would be brand spanking new to brand spanking new.

UPDATE. Sparkplugs.com is has cut me a check and is sending it along with the new set of NGK's. I assume they will be here some time next week so hopefully I can do the testing this coming weekend. I will be changing the plugs out myself so there will be a couple of hours gap between the NGK dyno run and the Pulstar dyno run.

Congrats!

I would like to recommend you do the exchange at the shop for closest plug to plug results as ambient temps/humidity would change less than if you drive home. Going home would negate the results I think.

Install new OEM plugs but coat with anti-seize. Torque to minimum specs, I think it is 8 ft/lb... Then removal at shop will be easier, even when hot. Run Dyno, exchange plugs, retest asap.

Yes This is what I was told to do and the shop told me they change plugs out all the time on hot aluminum heads but I'm just to concerned about the threads and such so I going to change them out my self. I would let them do it as sparkplugs.com said they would pay for the whole thing but this is my sole vehicle for the family and if something were to go wrong by changing the plugs when hot ... well I would never hear the end of it.

Has anyone here changed out their plugs while hot? Is this done more often than not?

Well I got some new info on the dyno. I don't know how common or uncommon it is for a dynomometer to have a built in weather station but this one does and its supposed to factor in the temp and humidity, they called it weather correction. So they say the time difference and possible temp and hum changes in between the dynos is not going to be a factor.

#11 ·
Most dynos have a built-in weather correction system that measures temp/humidity/etc and corrects based on abnormal conditions. We recently (1 month ago) started carrying the Pulstar plugs at my store, so I'm watching with interest to see if they live up to the hype. :)

#13 ·
Well sparkplugs.com has already cut the check for me to change them out myself at home. THey are not going to cut me a check for the difference it would be for the shop to change the plugs out for me while still on the dyno. Sparkplugs.com is okay with the time gap and or temp/humidity changes since the dyno has the capability of weather correction. If ya'll do feel strongly about the time/ weather changes I would be wiling to accept any contributions via paypal in order to have them changed out while on the dyno. So if anyone want to chip in then let it be known.. Lets make a list of who and how much . the difference by the way is $84.00. This is for them to change the plugs out, which they say is 1hr of labor plus tax. If we reach that amount then I will PM yall my paypal. If not then we will just go as planned. How does that sound?

#16 ·
Go as planned. The difference on dynoing is the vehicles own condition, i.e. engine temp, trans fluid temp. Ambient temp, humidity are commonly corrected.

I was on a dyno about 2 weeks ago, and had my UpRev 93 Performance Tune updated too. 6 HP/11 ft/lb TQ increase at the wheel over the Street Tune. What was really exciting, is that dynojet offers a free download of their dyno software. So, this time I got the actual files, not a picture, of the 8 runs. I can compare in lots of ways, change correction factors applied, etc.

Check into it! Fun stuff to have on the laptop. :)

Where is this info available to download?

Re: Pulstar Dyno Testing and Dynojet Software

This info?

FYI: Don't worry about it saying "for owners of...". Just click on the big Logo, and download the Dynojet software. :redblob"

Thank's! I downloaded it! It look's like a really cool program! It's got all kind's of function's! I also downloaded the complete manual, so i can try to figure out how to use the dang thing next time i get dynoed on a Dynojet. Have you uploaded any dyno run's to it yet?

Okay here are the results. I was able to change the plugs out myself while it was on the dyno after some cool down.
I will post up the dyno graphs later and pics and a couple of vids

best ngk with my 87 tune was 264hp and 364tq...( TIME 1:52pm)
best pulstar with 87 tune was 280hp and 374tq...( Time 3:57pm) Gain of 16hp(6.06%) and 10tq (2.74%)!!!!!!

I'm pretty shocked. But those are the results.
If you go to pulstar.com You will see that it states up to 12% more hp and tq for the iridiums. The platinums claim up tp 10% more hp and tq. I will see what kind of fuel economy I get with them in, but the iridiums do not claim to boost your fuel economy.

All in all when I drove the truck home I felt a better throttle response and it felt a little bit smoother. I did not FLOOR it on the home so I can't speak on if it felt that much better or not.

Wow! Far beyond what I expected, but I like the answer! :)

Wow that's amazing!

During the testing I decided to see what my 93 map would do. When I got tuned at Uprev I got tuned using 87 octane gas. and they gave me a 93 map which is pretty much the 87 tune with the timing advance.

So the past 2 gas tanks that I filled up recently were 93 octane because I could not decide if I was going to run the dyno with the 87 or the 93 map. The shop told me I would need 93 octane in the tank in order to get rue results for the 93 map but the 93 octane would have no effect on the 87 map. So I did both.
here was the results for the 93 octane They were pretty much dead even.

Best ngk with 93 map was 275hp and 374tq (time 2:11).... (ngk 87 run was 264hp and 364tq)(time 1:52)
best pulstar with 93 map was 275hp and 376tq (time 3:47)... (pulstar 87 run 280hp and 374tq) (time 3:57)

It seems the ngks performed better with the 93 octane. But were still out done by the pulstars with the 87 run.. ( less 2ft lbs tq)
)
Also while I was there after all the testing had been done. I decided to see if my eco fuel enhancer thingy was doing me any good for performance.. cause it dam sure is not doing anything at all for mpg's.
So I disconnected the eco device and did 2 runs.. what with 87 map and one with the 93 map.
Here are the results for that
87 map Pulstar run w/o the eco device 284hp and 376tq ( time 4:14) a gain of 4hp and 2 tq just from removing the eco device.
93 map Pulstar run w/o the eco device 272hp and 374tq ( time 4:16) a loss of 12hp and 2 tq with the 93 map.

Sorry if all of this is confusing. But I did a total of 10 runs first set of 4 runs were done with the ngk's first 2 were 87 and the last two were 93
then I switched the plugs to the pulstars and did 4 runs. First 2 were with the 93 and the last two were with the 87.( I had left the map on 93 when I did the first run on the pulstars so I just went with it)

then I did two more runs for myself to check my eco device. First one was 87 map and the second one was the 93 map

Lets remember I was not tuned at uprev on 93 octane. I was tuned with 87 octane in the tank

So... In the end (if I'm reading this right), the PulseStar does give a little better oomph, but at a much higher cost. And we are not sure what the durability of the PS plugs are over time. Did I get it right?

#38 · (Edited)
The pulstars cost 12.95 i think.. amazon has a two pack with free shipping for 25.90 .. And yes they made more power over the stock NGK's 16hp and 10tq. And you are right .. these pulstar iridiums have only been out for about 5 to 6 weeks although pulstar has had them in there test vehicle for a lot longer than that.

#36 · (Edited)
The graphs are there the pulstars made more power over the stock ngk's. And it was not pulstar who sent me money or the plugs ... it was sparkplugs.com
Idk what my numbers should be. most people with my mods are making about 285. that's without a resonator like I have and with 3" piping all the way back. I have the stock piping after the muffler

I just wanted to put everything out there for everyone to see exactly what I did and how many times I ran it and so on.
They were pretty cool over there at Murillomotorsports. They actually let me make all the runs on the dyno! I was pretty excited. Then they let me change out my own plugs while it stayed on the dyno. It took me a little longer because they would not allow me to use a folding chair for me to stand on. But I think I let it cool for about 30 minutes or so with fans on it before I started to change them out. My wife cut the sleeves off of an old sweatshirt so I could slide them over my arms to keep them from getting burned and had the mechanics gloves on. I could feel the heat coming off the plugs once I pulled them off and I could feel the heat off of the radiator hose and cap going through the sweatshirt sleeves. So I'm glad she did that for me. :)

The boots coming off the coil packs would not stay seated on the plug until I bolted the packs down. The ceramic part of the pulstar sparkplug is a little fatter than the NGK's I noticed this when I put the plug into the sparkplug socket with the rubber surround in it. I actually had to use an older sparkplug socket that had less and or worn rubber surround in it because the other socket would not come off of the plug once I had it threaded in.
