Door Locks

I just noticed the doors won't lock if your keys are in the ignition. Sweet!

Actually it wont let you lock the doors by closing them while it is in park. It will automatically pop open the lock if the keys are in the ignition.

You can lock them from inside when the keys are in the ignition or you are driving.

Or like my wife did when she went shopping one day. She didn't even realize it until she got back to the car and it was running and locked. She called me to come open it with her extra keyfob, but little did we know that when a Dodge is running the keyfob will not unlock the doors. Not sure if that is the same with other manufacturers.

It took me all of 2 seconds to slim-jim (sure glad I am allowed to carry one) her door after I figured out the keyfob wasn't making it.

OK I have a question. I had the keys in the ignition and key turned to "on" so that I could trouble shoot my trailer wiring hookup. Went back to the truck and the doors were locked. Luckily I was at home and had a spare set to unlock the doors with. Is this supposed to happen???

I've also noticed that my Titan locks the doors automatically about 30 seconds after I get out, but sometimes it doesn't.

Re: Door Locks

Explain this one...

Drove my Titan up the driveway and realized I ran over the hose. So I backed up the truck and then got out to see if I was off of the hose. Came back 30 seconds later and all four doors were locked with the keys in the ignition!!

A police friend came over with a slim jim and for about 45 minutes he worked on all four doors to no avail. Then out of the blue, while jiggling the driver door lock with the slim jim the drivers side electric window opened all the way.

We reached in and used the unlock button to unlock the doors and opened the door. Surprisingly, the alarm did not go off.

Please splain to me how the drivers side door can lock with the keys in the ignition. I suspect the "Lockout Protection" as explained in the manual in malfunctioning. As for the window opening on its own...I can't explain.

TDice3

ps. Bought my Titan used so I didn't get a valet key, extra key or fob.

Re: Door Locks

I don't know of any new car today that will lock with the keys in the ignition. Heck ...even my 01 Bug won't let you lock the keys in it.

Re: Door Locks

Hi All,
Just wanted to post for any others searching about this issue. This auto door locking stuff on the Nissans is real. Just got an Xterra and I knew it had some sort of locking feature, so when I jumped out to help wifey carry her bags, I purposely left the door ajar (usually not so anal, but I hadnt yet read up on the feature). Anyway, wind blew it shut and literally as I reached for the handle, the damn thing just locked. She must have seen all the color drain out of my face as I contemplated my options with a full tank of gas in the running xterra in the middle of a parking lot on new years eve. Not cool. Luckily she had grabbed her purse, and just happened to have the valet in it. If she didn't, I would have never forgiven my car, and we're just starting to get to know each other..

Hope this helps clear up the doubt. I'll be checking with the dealership first thing to either a.) get it fixed, b.) get the damn thing disabled, or c.) get an extra key fob to wear around my neck.

There is no auto door lock feature so to speak. The only time it'll lock itself is if you walk up to the locked car, unlock it with the FOB, and don't open the door within 30 seconds (this time period is adjustable on some models). Otherwise, just closing a door won't do it and if the key is in the ignition, you CAN'T lock the drivers door. If yours does anything other than this, there's a problem and you need to take it to the dealer.

My plan B would've been to use the key that is generally attached to the fob, lol!
