Whats a yard of Top Soil weigh?

Anyone here know what a yard of Top Soil, or a (Dozer bucket) wiegh's? On DTW they said one yard was a Ton. If thats the case then i can understand i was over payload. I just cant see how it was that much. Is dirt really that heavy. I was a 1/4 inch off my suspension stops. Serious question! Please limit your "should have bought a titan comments".. LOL

1.25 Tons. I gather it depends on region & water density though. Looks like a bit of lbs back there.. for sure.

A yard of typical soil weighs anywhere from 2200 to 2700 lbs. Like what was already posted, that number can change depending on moisture, clay content and such. I worked with trench boxes for a long time and we were taught soil is about 100 lbs per cubic foot. If a 5 foot wide by 12 foot deep trench collapsed you could turn a human into a pancake. Yup, dirt really is that heavy! I'd say your truck did a good job.

They are right

Budmanhemi, they are right.Dirt-topsoil,is about 70-85 lbs per cubic foot-water is about 60 lbs(dirt is heavier than water). You have a pretty good load there;it would have any 1/2 ton trucks close to the stops.I once had a yard of sand dumped into the bed of my little Toyota-I thought I had a hardtail truck-no suspension movement!Charlie

Thanks guys.. I feel alittle better now.. I was concerned for awhile that something was wrong with the suspension or something cause it was sitting so low. Had no idea dirt was that heavy.. Thanks..
