XM Antenna

I just got the XM kit from www.infinitiwholesaleparts.com

It came with the chunky looking roof mount antenna that has magnets plus an adhesive pad to mount it. I was going to get the TERK XM3 antenna which was lower profile and advertised magnet only mounting, but they said it was out of stock. I looked on the infinitiwholesaleparts.com web site today and they are now offering the Terk Micro plus the required splitter instead of the XM3 (which was a dual lead antenna). Quite a few other places were also out of stock on the XM3.

Is anybody using the chunky roof mount antenna that comes with the infinitiwholesaleparts.com kit? Is it working O.K.? Can it be removed without messing up the paint on the roof? Was the cable long enough?

Is anybody using the XM3? How is that working? Are the magnets sufficient to hold the antenna in place?

Anybody using the TERK Micro? How is that working?

BTW, the XM tuner has a Clarion sticker if anybody cares.

I don't know what antenna you're talking about, but I have the magnet-only Roady antenna and it sticks just fine.

O.K., thanks. I just ordered the Terk XMicro which is a small antenna with a magnet mount and rubber feet so it is not supposed to scratch the roof. I had to get a splitter also as it is a single lead antenna and Nissan's (antiquated) XM tuner (Clarion) uses a dual lead. I hope it works as I don't want to put the "boot heel" style antenna (photo attached) that came with Nissan's kit on my roof.

I'm doing the month to month XM at $9.99. I haven't done the Net Present Value (NPV) calculation but I'm willing to bet the deal is either a wash or the consumer actually loses. Also, I'm betting technology might change and I don't want to be tied into antiquated stuff at that time.

If you're careful on ebay, you can get a roady receiver, cradle, antenna, and FM modulator for 80-90 bucks. I got a SkyFi with cradle, antenna, and FM modulator for 140, a 220 package in the store.

I live in Tucson now. I like alternative, grunge, nu metal type stuff. I like avante gaurd stuff as well as classic stuff from the 60's thru now. I also like the dashboard concert series and channels for new age, electronica, etc. All this stuff is hard to come by in Tucson, so yeah, it's worth it for me. On the way home tonight I heard Smashing Pumpkins in concert from 1995, Our Lady Peace do "Superman's Dead", and Live's "The Beauty of Gray". Yeah, well worth it for me.

The Nissan XM + the boot heal antenna is about $300. If you want a small, low profile, magnetic roof mount antenna you can get the Terk XMicro for about $60 shipped including the required splitter (the Nissan XM is a dual lead unit, the more modern XM antennas and tuners are single lead). This is for the joy of having it integrate nicely with the Nissan radio & steering wheel controls. You get a better, more feature rich XM receiver like the XM Commander or the Delphi for like half of that. You can buy an Alpine AM/FM/CD with integrated XM tuner for about the same price as Nissan's XM tuner alone.

I bought the XM commander for 134, installed for about 80 more. It came with that dinky little antenna. Still stuck on the roof, so I guess the magnet works. Wired through the brake light. Not sure how or where they ran it through the truck, but probably glad I didn't see it. No reception problems at all, but have not been in a tunnel or sky scraper alley yet.

One further thing on the XM receivers is that the Roady and the Delphi SkyFi are portable and can be used outside of the vehicle. With the Nissan it is only for use in the truck.

I talked to a guy who installs them and he has his antenna on the deck of his rear window... He said it works just fine there.

We figured you could easily mount it on that spacious Titan dash..

He bought the Sony antenna because it was so small and inconspicuous.

Fred,

How did you hook up your Roady to your Titan audio system. I used an FM Modulater and I don't really like the sound quality. I was just wandering if you figured out something else. The aux audio imput didn't work well at all with my Roady.

I got a $5 aux. input jack to hook my roady to the dash AUX jack. It works great, I adjusted the sound output on the roady to the higher levels (8 or 9)to balance it against the radio/CD output - otherwise the radio/CD will be loud as hell when you switch from AUX to radio or CD. good luck.

I have the small antennae that comes with the commander and so far receptions has been pretty good. Actually works in my garage but when I go through our automatic car wash forget it. I post a pic of this antennae a week or so back, very small maybe half dollar size or slightly bigger.
