A lot of the guys here changed there's right away if you do a search on oil changes you can find out why. Personally I did mine at 3000miles. The Nissan service manual you should have with the purchase of your Titan recommends the first change at 3750 miles.

I did mine at 1500 miles. I used the free oil change for that. After the next 3000 or so, I'm doing it myself from now on.

Ok, i'll change it if they do it for free.

That leaves me still wondering why i'm only getting 10 MPG...

The dealer is perhaps misinformed. Change the oil and filter ASAP. There is a post on this forum with oil analysis, I believe by JetForeman that confirms (1) there is nothing special in the factory fill and (2) the advisability of an early oil change.

Alot of guys believe that there are small metal shavings that are floating around in the oil of a brand new engine, and that the 1st oil change should take place after the 1st 500-1000 miles. I'm no expert, but I think that there's no harm in changin the oil at that time, especially if there is small metal shavings from the new engine floating around. Just my $0.02

I do...

On all my new cars and trucks, I change it usually at 1K to 1.5K. Maybe I am strange but I believe that it does contain crap in there that you need to get out. I also then change it again at 3K. This way I am on the right schedule of every 5K miles. I use synthetic starting at 3K.

So far no problems with any of the vehicles that I own and have owned. Most miles on a car or truck that I owned was 187K on a subuaru. Still got 28mpg and didn't burn any oil.

Maybe those roos are o.k. I just sold one with 225,000 - not burning oil - conventional oil changed every 3K.

TrojanDan,

I came from the era when you changed oil at 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, and then every 2000 miles or so thereafter. Modern engines (especially Nissan's) are really machined to close tolerances, so there aren't those big chunks of garbage floating around in the engine anymore. That said, you won't hurt it by changing early. You will hurt it by changing too late.

As to the reports of 'stuff' in the oil, that could be true. For advice, let the engine itself do the talking: if your oil turns dark, it is beginning to be suspending a lot of particulate matter. Black and it is for sure time to change. Some color, and maybe you want to think about it. Clear, and you are still okay.

If the oil drops ANY amount from the factory fill level, or the refill level from a change, change it NOW. That drop is the protective additive package breaking down and burning away.

This advice is from an old-fashioned mechanic, and it is worth what you paid for it.

What I meant when I said theres stuff floatin in there is metal shavings from the new engine breakin in, and small metal particles from the new engine floating around. After that, I'm sure there is no room for small things floating in the engine. Either way, changin it at 500-1000 miles probably won't hurt.
