TrojanDan,
I came from the era when you changed oil at 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, and then every 2000 miles or so thereafter. Modern engines (especially Nissan's) are really machined to close tolerances, so there aren't those big chunks of garbage floating around in the engine anymore. That said, you won't hurt it by changing early. You will hurt it by changing too late.
As to the reports of 'stuff' in the oil, that could be true. For advice, let the engine itself do the talking: if your oil turns dark, it is beginning to be suspending a lot of particulate matter. Black and it is
for sure time to change. Some color, and maybe you want to think about it. Clear, and you are still okay.
If the oil drops ANY amount from the factory fill level, or the refill level from a change, change it NOW. That drop is the protective additive package breaking down and burning away.
This advice is from an old-fashioned mechanic, and it is worth what you paid for it.
