I have an XM Commander. There are two ways to connect it to the Nissan head unit - either via the FM radio or the AUX input. Connected thru the FM radio the sound suffers from the noisy front end on the radio and overall lack of frequency response (no lows) of the FM radio. Connected via the AUX input the level is low relative to the CD volume but there is ample volume control range to get well above a normal listening level and the frequency response is much better than the FM radio.

To my recollection both Delphi XM receivers also have AUX outputs if you are considering those units.

The Nissan XM receiver works directly into the head unit and does permit use of the steering wheel controls which the 'universal' receivers will not without additing additional electronics.

Yes, that's the one I was referring to.
My choice was to replace the head unit, although I was planning to replace the head unit before I bought the truck (or even listened to the radio). I do not think there is a decent OEM radio/audio system in any vehicle I can afford to buy, so I always plan to put equipment of my choosing in the vehicle once i purchase it.

Would there be any way to connect the Commander or Delphi by splicing into the Nbus cable?

I had my XM commander connected through the FM tuner for about two days. I did not notice any fading during that time. My complaint with it connected that way was with the frequency response of the FM radio which has virtually no lows. The majority of the sound came through the dash mounted tweeters, almost nothing through the door mounted speakers and absolutely nothing through the under seat woofer. All this with the bass settings on the head unit at max. But, as stated there was no fading with it connected that way.

Got my Commander connected through the AUX input - mounted in the overhead.

Sounds better than the FM - not as good as the CD

Very worthwhile investment!

Been in engineering too long to give an emphatic yes or no. The information on the Nbus cable is likely digital format data which would be very specific to the equipment being connected together. It is possible that some computer engineer somewhere could make an adapter 'box', but I do not know of such a device presently available.
