This evening I got a call from one of the engineer's at Nissan to discuss the course of events leading up to the failure of my rear diff. To make a long story short he thinks it is because of not having enough fluid in diff. But they are not sure yet. It is currently in the labratory being studied.
He suggested that I change out the fluid again then take it on a 200 mile +\- trip with the trailer. He also suggested that I make sure there are some nice grades included in the trip. After the trip I should call him and give him an update.
I am really surprised that I even recieved a call from Nissan. It seems like they are taking an intrest in solving a problem, assuming there is one. Again it could have some guy out to lunch at the factory. Maybe it was built on a Friday afternoon or Monday morning.

This is encouraging news to know that they are willing on a corporate level to research and fix the issue and most important reach out to the buyer and let them know that they are concerned about your discouragement.
They SHOULD read this web site, EVERYDAY. What better feed back could they recieve from the real world than us. If they truely care about their product and reputation it is an easy, no cost way to hear from customers (especially lifelong, Nissan enthusiasts like me) about our trucks and concerns or praise about it.
Just off the phone with Nissan. After passing all info about the truck, driving habits, etc etc we both seemed to agree that low fluid level was the culprit. My diff is being shipped there after they are done with my truck and they will look at it more closely. The person was very pleasant and truly interested in the information.
For me, it doesn't change my opinion of this truck one bit especially if it was a fluid level. Thats a factory QC issue vice a 'structure/quality' issue.
Would not stop me from going out and buying another one tommorow (But if I did, I might have the dealers service dept check the fluid level before I left with it)..Titan on!

How much did they offer to pay you for this testing? If he thinks you should
change the fluid on your new diff, the least he could do is send you a coupon.
Titansurveyor, and CaliforniaTitan thanks for your postings. The early warning you guys gave(at some personal risk) helped a lot of us out. There were-are-a lot of low lube levels out there that were caught because of the early heads up.Nissan should pay you guys a commission for saving them a lot of warranty work, and the bad word of mouth that a rear end fiasco could have caused for a generally very good, reasonably priced, and "fun" truck. Some others also helped sound the alarm on this, and walked the rest of us thru checking, and replacing the lube. Thanks to all,Charlie

I agree. Ask him why the Titan's diff holds a quart less than the diff on other 1/2 ton trucks.

They didn't. I never even thought of that. I just may have to call him back. I should with the price of gas.

Filling of the reservoir ... I'm sure Nissan will soon / already maybe, error proof the oil fill process. Once in my past, I was the Facility Eng. for a large automotive halfshaft assembly plant. One of the most difficult tasks in the initial set up of this was to get 3 tanker truck style grease tanks to pump thru a 500' service trench and then to dispense acurately as well as consistently into those d...n boots, tulips, and fixed joints. These are bulk systems and plenty of issues come with debug. I'm sure Nissan is using 6sigma QC statistical anaylysis to help problem solve it.
