I'm sick of this $$it. The exhaust manifolds to be replaced is like 2k. I tried calling nissan of america. Got into it with them and nothing happens. So since it bad for health and our family i'm going to report this to nhtsa and explain the thousands of people that suffer from this problem. And not only that but the bad fuMes that go to cab and could be harm to our familys. Second thing i will also be sueing nissan for selling cheap crap and not opening a recall for theses parts. Pleease i need everyone to help me file a complaint to nhtsa about the exhaust manifolds cracks and leaks. I will fight til the end with the help of every one and we will get what we want even if i have to file a national news break on tv.
Please help guys im counting on everyones help since i know i;m the only one.
Update.i just filed my complaint.one down so please join the fight.please every one please call nhtsa at 1-888-327-4236 and file a conmplaint on the exhaust manifold leaks and cracks. Need 100 people to complain to get nissan in court for a recall.please help.
i have no problems with my manifolds yet, yet being the key word, should i still call? i feel bad for you guys who have been constantly replacing these manifolds at such low mileages. seems like nissan is the only co with this issue on any of its trucks. im curious as to the location of the trucks with this issue and wonder if severe temp change can be what is causing it, seems like a materials flaw rather than design flaw, either way they should make a new run of the manifolds using better materials to replace cracked ones-no point in replacing bad with bad.
When I asked wether the new replacements were improved and was told yes. Mine goes in today for a oil change and they are going to check them. I know I have one that is cracked. They are both original equipment by the way. I have 67,000 on it now. I would be willing to bet they will have to order it or them for my truck, and I hear through this website that they are on backorder so we will see how the afternoon goes.
the fact that such a part is on backorder is scary cuz that means they are replacing alot of them. When the dealer orders the part is it the whole manifold/catalytic assembly? or do they weld new manifolds to the existing cats? I think i will just get some jba headers to avoid any problems, but ive heard runnnig them with stock cats is no good and i need my stock cats in california
Just got back from the dealership. Both are cracked. Ordered parts and said 3-5 bus. days to get them. They did not say anything about being on backorder.
Normally, if a part undergoes a production change (different supplier, fabrication procedure change, etc) the part number will either supersede or the part will "Service File" and new part numbers will be required to order. Neither is the case, the original Part number(s) went on back-order (at one point there were over 1000 dealer orders) and have since resumed shipment. The old part numbers are still being received which most likely means Nissan put a hold on the remaining stock due to low quanities as well as for inspection purposes to determine a resolution for the issues at hand.
So were the manifolds changed on the 2008+ trucks? I know the intake manifold was changed on 2007+ and the catback setup his 2-in and 1-out vs. a y-pipe and 1-in 1-out on the older ones.
Maybe a stupid question, but why not have the cracked ones welded if it's cracking where they meet the cat-pipe. You can weld cast iron, just have to have the right stuff to do it.

I know in my case they are under the 80,000 mile emission warranty, so it will be a free relacement. If I were over the warranty I would more than likely be doing headers and doing it myself.
The RH exhaust manifold is cracked on my truck and has been for a long time. What is the federal warranty on emissions?
I only hear it during initial start-up and never thought about having it replaced. I know several people who had theirs replaced only to have it crack again.
I have at least one cracked exhaust manifold, also. I have over 100,000 miles, so I'm not sure if my truck will be considered for any replacement. I'm just going to replace the manifold with a header and hi flow cats.
I will gladly file a complaint on this, and we should include the cats! They are famous for failing and being sucked into the engine causing catastrophic failure! This is a good start to fixing all the cheap crap on our trucks! :redblob"
Explain to me how a catalyst material from a failing catalytic converter can go against the exhaust flow and get into the engine... Typically when they fail they clog and the truck will start to run super rich.
When mine failed @ 82k miles, the dealer told me if not fixed right away it might cost me a new engine. I asked why and they said the clogged converter causes to much back pressure and the valve seats will break apart and fall into the cylinder. They seen one fail in 50 miles and seen them run a few thousand after being diagnosed with clogged converter and still running. It is a gamble
I don't think a loose piece of converter can back flow into the engine because there is suppose to be a continous flow out your exhaust..
^ Now that is plausible... I was more pointing out the fallacy in the previous poster's comment. Cat substrate doens't get "sucked" into the engine, but it can cause serious issues when they fail and clog.
Typically you'll know because the car runs pig rich, is way down on power, and the cats will get so hot they can glow. It was an issue in some of the early 2003 Mustang Cobras when the new blown 4.6 came out.

I don't see what "exhaust pulse" has to do with it. Typically designers will use the vacuum created by the exhaust pulse to begin drawing air into the combustion chamber. They do this by opening the intake valve while the exhaust event is still occuring. As far as I know they don't try and suck exhaust back in through the exhaust port it just went through. So I still can't see how catalytic converter substrate would make it back up the exhaust path into the combustion chamber.
Where'd the post with the Online Link go to??? I don't mind filing a complaint if you'll post a template to copy/paste from... I had one covered under the 60k mile Powertrain Warranty and the other covered under my 100k mile Extended Warranty... I think they were replaced with different part numbers but I don't remember for sure... But I'm too lazy to think of a description to file and I'm not much of a complainer so thinking up words for a complaint comes a little difficult for me. And I still don't see how this is a "Highway Safety" Concern to be filed with the NHTSA.
Exhaust "scavenging" is using pulse timing to better "pull" the exhaust out of the combustion chamber. I still don't see how this would let catalytic converter material get back inside the combustion chamber.
2002-2003 NISSAN ALTIMA, 2002-2004 SENTRA; VOLUNTARY RECALL CAMPAIGN ENGINE EXHAUST PIPE HANGER PIN AND PRE-CATALYST
Nissan has determined that some 2002-2003 model year Altima and 2002-2004 model year Sentra vehicles equipped with the 2.5 liter engine have defects that relate to motor vehicle safety. For 2002-2003 model year Altimas, there is a possibility that the exhaust pipe hanger pin may catch debris from the road that could be ignited by contact with the catalytic converter and cause a fire. In addition, for 2002-2003 model year Altimas and 2002-2004 model year Sentras, there is a possibility that certain engine operating conditions may cause damage to the pre-catalyst. Material from inside a damaged pre-catalyst could enter the engine and result in increased oil consumption. If the engine oil level is not checked on a periodic basis and drops below the low level, and the driver continues to operate the vehicle ignoring noticeable engine noise, engine damage may occur which could result in a fire.
Took almost 5 years for em to admit there was a problem with the Gen 1 Nissan Xterra manifolds. NTSA won't give a damn unless it's a safety issue, but it does make Nissan look bad if there are hundreds of complaints. In the Xterra club (My previous vehicle) we submitted hundreds & hundreds of complaints for the Fuel Float issue and that took almost 5 years again for Nissan to do anything about it.
Filed my complaint as well. I've already got my Doug Thorley LT's to replace my cracked manifolds, but maybe Nissan will write me a check??? Doubt it... happy to support the cause though!
My passenger manifold just cracked @ 95k, I"ll be filing my complaint tomorrow.
I wanna do the JBA shortys w/ HF cats but muffler shop can't guarantee that i will pass smog. anyone know if you will pass smog if you use OBD2 HF cats ? I hope i get a check nissan if i do this mod
