I am looking to purchase a Yamaha YZF-R6. I was looking at new ones. Does anyone have any input on the pros and cons of buying new? Or do you think it is better to go used?
i owned a '03 r6 till i totaled it. ive been riding for 9 yrs and this was by far the best bike ive ever riden. i bought it new and it was nice knowing i had a warranty behind me. the only down side is the break in period. having such a preformance engine under you and not being able to gun it is sooo hard to do! i never got to take it to the track but pushed it hard on the streets and in the mountains and never even came close to finding out what she could do! This is one bad *** machine as stats and races will atest to! good luck on your purchase.
I own two - Triumph Trophy and Kawasaki KDX220. New or used - depends, if you have the cash, want to ensure you have a bike that wasn't abused and plan to keep it for a preety long time, go new. If your a new rider or short on funds - probably better to go used.

What is the break in period for the r6? What kind of miles should you expect to get out of the engine with proper maintenance and nothing out of the ordinary happening?

If it is your first bike, I suggest getting something a little less radical. Depreciation on bikes sucks other than Harley. I'd go used, but that's just me. Check insurance lately for full coverage if you finanace it? I HIGHLY recommend you checking into that first.

I had a Yamaha R1 until it got stolen. (Now I'm back to dirt bikes with a Yamaha WR 450.) Best bike I ever owned. It had the power of a liter bike but the weight felt like a 600. I liked it much more than my 600s because you didn't have to rev the piss out of it to get the power on. On a twisty track the 600s are better but on the street I liked the torque of the R1. Anyway, you can get some great deals on leftovers over going used. I prefer a new bike because I feel that most street bikes get extremely abused and you don't know if it had all the proper maintenance performed unless the previous owner can show you all the dealer service records. At the end, it comes down to how much cheaper you can get a used one for over going with a leftover. Then you decide if the price difference is worth the uncertainty of the bikes history.
The insurance for an R1 was 280 for 6 months and the insurance for the R6 is 225 i think. The more i'm thinking about it I'd like to find a 2001 or 2 with lower miles for like 5000 or so. What would you consider to be lower miles for a 2 or 3 year old bike?

I think low miles for a street bike are 2000/yr max. So a 2 year old bike with 4000 miles or 3 year old with 6000 miles i would consider low mileage. Do a search on www.cycletrader.com to get an idea of what you should be paying.
I ride a 1997 Suzuki Bandit 1200-S, piped and jetted, 124rwhp 80ftlb tq. As for the R6, and longevity, I ride with a guy that has a 99 R6 with 65,000 miles on it, and it still runs like a top.

I own an 84 Honda V-65 Magna. I bought an 84 Honda V-45 Magna new, back in 84, then rode with a few guys who had the big Magna and I got the urge to buy one. I ended up going to Europe to work and took my Magna with me and sold it to a German policeman. When I retired and returned to the US in 1990 I found my low mileage V-65 Magna on the Internet. It was close enough to my home in Calif that I had the seller take it to my motorcycle mechanic and he inspected it and pronounced it "good", so I bought it and had it waiting for me when I got to Calif.
Although it's a 20 yr old cruiser, I love to have new Harleys with beefed up engines come up along side me, because when we both twist the throttle all they see is my 20 year old back fender.
Ain't life grand!!! And I agree with the earlier post, if you're new to biking, buy a good used bike, don't buy more performance than you really need or can handle as a beginner, and please Ride Safe!!
