So I live in New York state and according to the rules, a pickup that weighs > 5000lbs has to be registered as commercial unless the bed has been completely and permanently enclosed by a camper top, and has seats, seat fittings or camping equipment mounted in the truck bed.
Anyone else in NYS manage to get around this...I mean really, the difference is only 200 friggin pounds.
Im wondering if a tonneau cover would do the trick.

Sorry Trikky I don't live in NY nor do I have any advice for you. I just wanted to ask do you already have your Titan? The dealer did not register your vehicle? If you have not gotten it yet can you get a commercial rate on the Titan? Normally the commercial rate is cheaper. The camper top kind of takes away the truck look and looks like an SUV. Also adds even more weight and a good one is well over a thousand bucks and if you don't need one other then to be legal that's a bummer. When you want to load high you are going to need a trailer or take the darn top off!
Trikky, I live in NY and I was worried about the same thing. I wanted to carry over my old plates (passenger) and the dealer told me I couldn't because it would have to be registered as commercial because of the weight. So, I figured "oh well, I tried"
Well, when I picked up my truck, guess what? It had passenger plates!! I didn't ask how or why. I was just happy they pulled it off............somehow! lol
I haven't gotten the title yet. I am curious to see what the weight says on there. How long should it take me to get the title? It's been over 6 weeks
I live in ny too my dealer told me he was going to try to just carry over my plates. I am not going to use it for commercial use. I hope i get it too going to get a cover soon after i get it I am still waiting on my truuck

I really hope they can do this for me. It will be a drag to have to avoid all Parkways in the country. Out of curiosity, which truck do you have? King cabs:The XE and SE 4X2 are under 5000 as is the XE 4x4. For the Crew Cab the XE and SE 4X2s are under 5000 also.
I mean really, you are talking nothing. 1/8 of a ton difference, and I will not use this truck for work AT ALL, just FUN.
Title should be coming soon. When I bought my 03 Accord crapbox it took a while.

No, I don't have the truck yet. Hopefully Saturday, but given the dealer's hesitation more like Monday. I know I can get cheaper rates for a commercial vehicle but it really would be a pain to watch where I have to drive, especially if I am somewhere I am not familiar with...but hey...that's why I have NAV. Anyway, yeah, I want a tonneau cover that is flexible but can still lock. I don't want to lose the functionality or looks of the open bed but I do need something relatively secure that I can protect my stuff with when I travel. Anyone know of one that exists?

I bought my smoke ~ 6 weeks ago.... Honestly, I was not aware of the commercial tag issue. I transferred (via the dealer) my passenger tags from a Fooord Raaanger...... (I owned that for 3 long months!). Dealer never mentioned any issues about commercial tags.....(although, as I think about it, he may have asked if I wanted commercial tags).

Hi, TriKKy!
Congrats on getting a Titan. I went to pager repair school in Rochester,
at Ramsey Electronics. Seemed like a nice town. Great pizza, anyway.
If you look at all the threads on here about tonneau's, you'll find more
info than you would ever want to know. I'm sort of leaning toward the
Extang full tilt, but may change my mind when I finally decide to get one.
Chrome step bars will be my next mod, and a couple of options are now
available. I'm sure we'll have more and more choices as time goes on.
I live in NY and have commercial plates. I'm not sure what you mean by having to avoid parkways. You can drive a pickup the same places whether it has commercial plates or not. I think is just larger commercial vehicles that are restricted and just because you have "commercial" plates doesn't make it a commercial vehicle. If you look at 95+% of the pickups with NY plates, they say commercial. Actually I believe that it is only recent that your able to register a pickup in NY with non-commercial plates.
On another note, I have the Truxedo tonneau and it's awsome. I've had other snap-type tonneaus and the Truxedo is so much easier to open an close and it can't be opened with the tailgate locked without cutting it. Do a search on Truxedo and you'll find lots of posts.

If you have been doing that you can technically get a ticket. All entrances to any parkways, especially in NYC, say NO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. That is the whole point to parkways. So if you live in NYC, for instance, you cannot take Grand Central Parkway/Norhtern State, Cross Island, etc. You also cant go out to Jones beach with any ease. This is a fact. My brother has had pickups for years.
So on the NYS DMV site http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/register.htm
you will see where it talks about pickups. But for some reason it puts the limit @ 5500lbs vs the 5000 in other documents. But anyway, on the page it even goes so far as to say "The agency that controls a parkway decides if pick-up trucks with passenger class plates are allowed on the parkway. To make sure you can drive your pick-up truck on a parkway, contact the agency that manages the parkway." So you see, even with passenger plates, some pickups are STILL not allowed on parkways...hope this helps.
I will search for the tonneau info, thanks :-D
Update: I got off the phone with the DMV just now and here is the scoop:
They JUST CHANGED the law from 5000 to 5500lbs either yesterday or today!!! And I asked them again to be sure about pick-ups with commercial plates not being allowed on Parkways, and I was told I was correct.

I never said you couldn't, just that there was a particular risk Cops wont tend to bother you unless you have business logos on the side of your truck or you are heavily loaded with ladders or gardening equipment.
You will definitely be able to register as passenger since no titan is over 5500lbs...thankfully.

I guess you learn something everyday. I live in upstate NY (Syracuse area) and it's not an issue here. Once and awhile I go to NYC so I'll have to watch out. Thanks for the info Trikky.
BTW, thanks for not getting defensive and just explaining the facts... your a class act (like most people on this site).

WOW! TriKKy, nice to meet ya, I live in West Henrietta... What dealership you getting the Titan from?
As a Nissan pickup owner for a very long time I can say it was only recently that we have been given an option to register as Passenger OR Commercial. My '95 XE-V6 4x4 KC is registered Commercial only because back when I bought it, it was the only option and as I renew via the mail I have yet to see the option of changing it.
So, let me ask a dumb question. If I register my Titan when I get it as Passenger, what advantage is there other than the fact that I can drive on the Parkway legal?
