Towed A Forklift Out Of The Mud

Had a 10,000lb forklift stuck in the mud @ work last week. Towed it out with the TITAN. One of the other guy's tried it first with his "HEMI" but it just sat in place and spun the tires. Just not enough torque or HP I guess.

After work we had to call a towtruck for his DURANGO as he smoked his transmission. He was not happy at all but may get warranty coverage if he doesn't admit what he was doing at the time it died.

Are you saying the guy in the Durango had the HEMI and he blew the tranny trying to pull out the tractor. If so, that's a blow to the HEMI boys, especially all their trash talking of how the Titan's can't handle a real load!

Yes, I'm not sure what happened to his DURANGO but it left on a flatbed towtruck on its' way to the local DODGE dealership. It is definitely a drivetrain issue as the engine starts fine but won't go into gear at all. He said he had it in 4WD LOW during his towing attempt. Then it wouldn't engage at all. Maybe the transfer case??

Hey, small world Ken. I live in Southaven also! Going out on a limb here, but do you work at one of the Pan Am training centers? If you couldn't guess from my avatar I'm on the Avro.

Yes, I work at the Memphis Training Center <C208, DC10, & B727>. Those engines look like an AVRO RJ 75? Is that correct? It's great to see someone else from the hometown here! Do you work for MESABA or PINNACLE? I used to run maintenance on the SAAB340B simulator when it was here at the FedEx training center.

Hooking to a heavy load in 4LO and spinning the tires is one of the quickest ways I know of to destroy any and all of the drive train components. It just gets worse the better the traction. Most of the time the vehicle will hop. This causes the tires to turn quickly then stop. It puts a major shock on the system. A good rule of thumb is to never allow your tires to spin pulling on something unless your truck is on a slipery surface.

Hey Ken! I work for Mesaba and you are almost exactly right, its the RJ85 not the RJ70, but they are the same engines on the 70 and 85 I believe So if you worked on the Saab sim, you probably worked with a lot of the Mesaba (and Pinnacle) folks when Mesaba did its training in Memphis?

Jim: Good to hear from you. The family and I flew on an RJ85 in June from Detroit to Halifax. Very nice airplane, so quiet and powerful. Also no reversers on touchdown which adds to the quiet ride. I enjoyed that flight and the crew was super as well. The flap deployment noise scared some folks in the seats in front of us but I explained that it was normal for this aircraft type with the high wings.

My CAE SAAB340B simulator went to the new PanAm training center in Eagan along with the crappy Flightsafety SAAB340 and the RJ85 simulator from Dulles. I was asked to relocate to MN to run the simulator maintenance shop at that time but really like where we are now so I refused.

sounds like he had a traction problem. Anyone that tries to pull out a stuck forklift with a brand new truck needs to be examined for fitness.
