Checking Rear Differential

I've read all the posts about checking, etc and I just want to make sure - should I be putting the high performance thread sealant on the fill plug as well as the drain plug. And also, was there ever a consensus on the torque rating of either plug? Thanks.

Try using Permatex thread sealant. It is made to seal threads on automotive applications. It is not like Loctite in that it is made primarily to seal the threads and keep fluids from working their way around them and can be easily removed using hand tools.

Front diff drain plug: 20
Front diff fill plug: 20

Service Manual, p. FFD-13

Rear diff drain plug: 20
Rear diff fill plug: 25

Service Manual, p. RFD-11

Thanks a lot bestatchess - guess I should go pick up the service manual - or just download the individual pages - sounds like it's got a lot of good info in it.

If you have a broadband connection you can DL the whole thing for a one-day subscription fee of $20. It is about 92 megs, so I wouldn't try to get it with a dial-up. If you search for "service manual download" you can find all the details. I think it is well worth the $20.

Today I was looking at the specifications on the bottle of Teflon pipe dope and it is rated to seal pipe threads on pipes containing oil and has a heat rating of 500+ degrees. It might be more cost effective to use this rather than expensive Permatex sealants that I mentioned in a earlier post. You would also have the benefit of having just one product to use on your plumbing parts and your Titan.

I wouldn't want to use teflon tape/liquid on the rear diff - Even if you know how to apply teflon and keep the application a few threads from the tip of the plug, you'll still get some teflon chunks in the diff.

Isn't that the case with any kind of sealant used? Also, all it takes is just a minuscule amount on the threads to make a good seal and the thickness of the Teflon keeps it from working it way around the threads.

Back in the 50's we had an old hound dog who loved to jump in the pond when it was hot. If there was anyone sitting on the porch, he would slip up on the porch and start shaking. Everyone within 20 feet would get wet. I believe it kind of made his day. He was my Grandpas dog and his name was Squid. Sound familar?

Not sure? The purpose of my post was to bring the thread out to the front (notice the dates of the post) since their seems to be a lot of interest by some members concerning the health of their Differentials.

Nissan won't pay for rear diff oil change...

Now if you won't to poke at me that's cool, just remember that just like that old hounddog I can also dish it out.

Don't get all stove up Squid, just poking a little fun at some of your pokings.

Not at all, Like my dad said, "don't dish it out if you can't take it"

That means I'm fair game.

Sometimes a little friendly poking makes the day go by faster. I better watch what I am writing, my wife just walked through and was reading this. I better go splain.

Yeah, splain to her why the lawn looks like hell, the garbage is piling up, and you're in the office throwing cyber-darts!
