electric brake wiring question

hi i've got an xe model and am gonna hook up a brake controller. i found a plug with 3 wires that are red/green(brake signal), brown/white(brake output), and red(12v). i know i can just ground the controller either to the battery or a metal area. so my question is is that 12v supposed to be constant or a switched 12v? cuz mine is constant so wouldn't the brake controller just always be on and drain the battery? any help would be appreciated. thanks guys!

The controller should only get the power from the 7 pin conector so it's only on when a 7 pin plug in hooked in. Can't remember the wire colors but I had to soldier the nissan plug adapter to the controller I used on my chevy and it worked like a charm. You should still have the plug in under your dash on the drivers side but I can't say for sure. Sorry this probably isn't any help

We had a Teconsha(sp?) Prodigy controller installed when we bought our trailer and so have no idea how it was wired but it does stay on for a certain time period after I have removed the key. After something like 5 minutes, it automatically shuts off. It is only two little LED's when not connected and two LEDs plus the letter C when it is connected so the drain is minimal. Sorry this does not directly address your question but hopefully you can glean something from it.

Also, I seem to remember there being some pretty in depth discussions regarding the wiring in other threads. I'm sure if you do a search, you will turn up some more helpful information.
