Just wanted to let you guys know about this recall. Rear seat belts!! But, not that their too short. Check out this.
Make : NISSAN Model : TITAN Year : 2004
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 04V345000 Recall Date : JUL 01, 2004
Component: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 59947
Summary:
CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 201, "OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN INTERIOR IMPACT." AN AREA ON THE REAR PILLAR WHERE THE REAR SEAT BELT UPPER ANCHOR IS ATTACHED MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENTLY ENERGY ABSORBENT.
Consequence:
THIS COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY IF THE AREA IS STRUCK IN SOME TYPES OF CRASHES.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE OUTBOARD REAR SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES WITH NEW ONES. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 27, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
Notes:
CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATIONS AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
It would NOT have been converted before the sale. Dealerships very rarely take vehicles off the front line to do a recall unless it is a severe safety issue. It usually has to be done after the fact by the customer. In this case, the recall doesn't start until late September, so most likely parts for the recall won't be available to the dealerships in a very large quantity until the recall date.
If it was manufactured after the recall was issued (even though it won't begin until semptember), than Nissan would have rectified the issue in their manufacturing process. Check your build date and call 1800nissan1 and ask if you are affected. They will take your Vin# and tell you right away if your seatbelts will need the "energy bolstering.."
I read this thread hoping for a recall for the overtightening / strangulation issue. I guess not.
When I come to a stop and lean forward to look around a corner, I CAN'T MOVE!!! The seatbelt locks at odd times and every time the brake pedal is evenly lightly depressed. I hope they recall this too.
My dealer replaced a rear seat belt retractor no questions asked when I told him it did not release well. It worked perfect when I took it in, they still ordered and replaced the part.

Okay guys just picked up my titan today build date of 7-4 and its' rear middle seatbely problem just showed itself on the way home, don't count them to already be fixed!
Here is a link to the recall that was sent to Nissan dealers. It outright states that federal law requires all new vehicles in inventory MUST be retrofitted before they can be sold. This link was provided by Jamie @ titanparts247.com.

I thinks there are two issues with the seatbelts, the first that bgRed posted has probably been fixed- that has to do with crash strength. The second problem (that can be seen on an everday issue) is that the seatbelts sometimes/often "lock" and will not release untill you push ALL the belt back into the mechanism for it too release. A real pain for those of us with kids and car seats.
chazz1202, the reason they do that is specifically because of kids and car seats. When you install the car seat, if you don't pull the belt all the way out to get it into the "locking" mode, you're not installing the seat correctly. The locking mode makes sure there's constant tension on the belt that's holding the car seat in place.
I think the issue is that the rear belts are just too short, making it too easy for adults to pull the belt all the way out just by leaning forward a bit, engaging this locking mode.
On the other hand, if you're talking about a booster seat, where the belt isn't just holding the seat in place but is holding the child and the seat in together as a unit, ignore what I just said! I can see how the locking mode would be a pain in that case.
The locking problem that I am having is like this...I put my 4 year old daughter in her booster seat (center), go to pull the seat belt out, only to have it locked in place. I have to lift up hard on it to get it to release. I have a similar problem with my driver seat belt. My other two back seat belts have yet to be used. I'm using the LATCH anchors for my infant daughter's infant seat (right side). The other side doesn't get used at all.

yes mowog it's a booster and definately a problem, dealer looked at it and tried to replace the mechanism but had to order the "new style" mech since his were the same stock # as mine. The service manager said he "lossened" the old mechansism a little and will call when new part is in. However they loosened it does seem to help, it only has locked up twice since then (2 days worth of driving) vs. locking up about 12 x (in one day.)
For me, there are actually three problems with the rear belts:
1. the one described in the recall
2. the 'strangulation' problem (locking the belt ever tighter)
3. the anchoring of the rear outside belts is way too high, causing the belt to run over most passenger's throats
To me, the third one is the most serious one. I have had kids and adults in the back, and they all experienced this problem. Because of it, my ten-year old only wants to sit in the middle seat. Problem is, that's the only one without a headrest...
I did buy some of those seat belt clips that allow you to change the angle of the upper part of the belt, but aren't really very comfortable.
I posted about this once before, but judging by the responses I am one of the few that have problem 3., or most Titan owners just don't use the rear seats very much.

Exactly thing happened to mine except there was no booster. Dealer replaced center seat belt and it works fine since but they think Nissan will release a newly designed mechanism.
My dealership said they hadn't seen the recall notice, so they could not work on my seatbelt, even though I showed them the copy I received on the forum.
